I’ve learned firsthand that prioritizing self-care isn't a luxury; it's a necessity to sustain your energy, passion, and well-being. It’s all about those 'little things' that add up to make a big difference in refilling my cup.
One of my non-negotiables is nourishing my body. After long hours in scrubs, the last thing I want to do is spend ages cooking. So, grocery shopping becomes a strategic mission to stock up on healthy, easy-to-prepare meals and snacks. I often dedicate a bit of time on my days off to meal prep, ensuring I have nutritious options ready to go. This not only saves time but also prevents me from reaching for less healthy choices when I’m exhausted. Think fresh fruits, yogurt, and even healthy dog treats for my furry companion, whose presence itself is a calming influence.
Movement and fresh air are also key. There’s something incredibly therapeutic about stepping outside and feeling the sun or a gentle breeze. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the neighborhood in my favorite moccasins with my dog, or a more intense hike, needing to be outside helps clear my head. It’s a simple act, but that time away from the hospital environment, away from screens, actively helps me relax and de-stress. I’ve found that even just 20-30 minutes of walking outdoors can significantly improve my mood and energy levels.
De-stressing through hobbies is another vital component. For me, that often means curling up with my e-reader and a bag of my favorite candy. Immersing myself in a good book allows my mind to escape, even for a short while, from the stresses of work. It’s a quiet, personal ritual that signals to my brain it’s time to unwind. Similarly, designated rest days are sacred. Sometimes, it’s simply relaxing on the couch with loved ones, enjoying the quiet companionship, or celebrating small victories after a particularly tough shift with sweet treats. It's about consciously choosing to switch off and enjoy the downtime.
Finally, don't underestimate the power of self-pampering. Even when I’m wearing scrubs most of the time, feeling good about myself outside of work boosts my confidence and spirits. Simple acts like applying tanning mousse or putting on false eyelashes for a night out (or just for myself!) can make a huge difference. It's about feeling put-together and cared for, not just as a nurse, but as an individual. These small gestures help me maintain a sense of identity beyond my profession, ensuring I'm truly refilling my cup, both physically and mentally, to face another challenging but fulfilling week.
