Black History Month Fantasy Reads

It’s a sad fact that mainstream publishing leans far more white than the true reflection of the diverse author voices out there. I consider my own tastes to be pretty diverse, but I examined my shelves the other day and realized most of my books are indeed by white authors. I’d like to be more intentional in finding and sharing BIPOC authors and their accomplishments with my friends. I’m here to learn and take recommendations! #blackhistorymonthbooks #blackliterature #blackhistory #booktok #reading

... Read moreAs we recognize Black History Month, it's essential to highlight fantasy novels that present unique perspectives from BIPOC authors, broadening the literature landscape beyond mainstream narratives. Titles like 'Children of Blood and Bone' by Tomi Adeyemi and 'The Gilded Ones' by Namina Forna invite readers to immerse themselves in fantastical worlds that still reflect real-life experiences and cultural richness. Additionally, 'The Fifth Season' by N.K. Jemisin not only captivates with its intricate world-building but also won the prestigious Hugo Award, showcasing the literary excellence found in BIPOC contributions to the genre. Readers are encouraged to explore hashtags such as #BlackHistoryMonthBooks and #BlackLiterature to connect with recommendations and discussions around these significant works. By diversifying our bookshelves, we not only honor BIPOC authors but also enrich our understanding of various cultures and histories through the lens of fantasy.
