Wicked Book Reviews

2024/12/18 Edited to

... Read moreMy journey into the world of Oz beyond Dorothy's familiar tale began with the 'Wicked' book series, and let me tell you, it's a wild ride! If you're pondering, 'Is Wicked worth reading?' or curious, 'Does Wicked have a book?' – the answer to both is a resounding yes, and yes, it's a fantastic series that offers a much darker, complex origin story for the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba. Many people approach the books after experiencing the beloved musical, and it's crucial to understand that Gregory Maguire's 'Wicked' novels are a very different beast altogether. While the musical is a vibrant, often heartwarming (and heartbreaking) narrative of friendship and self-discovery, the books plunge much deeper into political intrigue, philosophical debates, and the intricate nature of good versus evil. They will undoubtedly challenge your preconceived notions of what you thought you knew about Oz. Forget the simple good vs. bad; here, morality is a murky swamp. One recurring criticism I've encountered, and something that immediately resonated with me from a particular 'one star review' I once stumbled upon, is about the presence of 'unlikable characters.' And honestly, when I first delved into the pages, I might have thought, 'Wow, these individuals are truly something else – not exactly charming!' But here’s the pivotal point: they are absolutely supposed to be multifaceted and, at times, difficult. Elphaba isn't your quintessential hero; she's fiercely intelligent, deeply passionate, but also often morally ambiguous and prickly. Glinda, too, is far from the sweet, benevolent figure you might expect, possessing her own layers of vanity and political ambition. The true brilliance of the 'Wicked' book series lies in its steadfast refusal to categorize anyone as purely good or purely evil. It compels you to critically think, to attempt to empathize with diverse perspectives, and to question the swift judgments often made by society. This isn't a fluffy, lighthearted fantasy; it is a profound, sometimes grim, exploration of prejudice, power dynamics, and the complexities of identity. For anyone seeking a thorough 'review of Wicked book' and weighing whether to invest their precious reading time, I'd confidently say that if you appreciate rich, intricate world-building, profound philosophical undertones, and characters that aren't afraid to be messy and flawed, then this series is unequivocally for you. While it might not fit the conventional definition of a 'thriller,' its intricate plot, unexpected twists, and deep character development certainly keep you engrossed and on the edge of your seat. My personal 'Wicked book rating' is very high—I'd give it a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is precisely because it dares to be unconventional and offers such a profound literary experience. It provides an extraordinary expansion of a classic tale, crafting a backstory that, paradoxically, makes the musical even richer, even as it takes significant liberties with the original source material. My advice? Don't go into it expecting the musical transcribed onto paper; instead, anticipate a thought-provoking, unique literary journey that will force you to reconsider everything you thought you knew about Oz and its fascinating inhabitants.
