Why???

Walking outside should be a safe and pleasant experience for everyone, but unfortunately, many neighborhoods lack proper sidewalks, creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians. From my own experience, living in areas without sidewalks meant constantly navigating streets where cars pass dangerously close. It heightened my anxiety about walking, especially with kids. Sidewalks do more than just provide a designated walking path—they encourage community engagement and healthier lifestyles. Without sidewalks, pedestrians often have to walk directly on the road, increasing the risk of accidents, particularly in areas with fast-moving traffic or poor lighting. Moreover, neighborhoods lacking sidewalks send a discouraging message: that walking isn’t prioritised or safe. This can discourage residents from walking, limiting opportunities for exercise and social interaction. Children are particularly vulnerable, as without sidewalks, parents worry about letting kids walk or play outside freely. From a urban planning perspective, sidewalks are an essential infrastructure element that promotes pedestrian safety, accessibility for all ages and abilities, and even environmental benefits by reducing car usage. Advocating for sidewalk installation or improvements is vital for creating safer, more welcoming neighborhoods. In conclusion, sidewalks aren’t just pavements; they represent a commitment to community well-being. Every neighborhood deserves safe, walkable streets where children can play and adults can enjoy exercising or commuting on foot without fear.
