why i hate dorm living as a college student

dorm living can really make or break your college experience. as an introvert and generally not a party goer I can say with absolute certainty that my college experience has been ruined since living in a dorm. now for those of you going into college and going to live in a dorm, this is not meant to scare you away from it because some people truly do love dorms and you may have a great experience. this is just my opinion going off from what I have gone through.

1) No privacy.

As a typically private person, I need my space and my own time to just decompress and be by myself. You will never get that in a dorm. You are always, always gonna have people in your space wherever you go. At the end of the day all I want is to curl up in a ball and sleep, but then you have to deal with roomates and noises and all the other issues of dorms, but alas im getting ahead of myself.

2) So many rules

The people that run my building could care less about you or your problems, now again this may be different in your situation so take this with a grain of salt. The rules in my dorm border on obnoxious, you can’t have candles, you can’t hang lights, no guests, get you mail at this specific time, “sorry I dont know where your mail is”, “oh your have a problem with neighbors 🍃🍃?” “whatever not my problem”. I could go on. It’s really hard to feel comfortable in your space when people are constantly throwing rules at you. Not to mention dorm checks…I can’t even get into that one right now.

3) Always Loud and Overstimulating

I cannot explain to you how overstimualting dorm life is. Whether it’s living with a roomate and having to deal with when they go to sleep or wake up in the morning, loud noises, people screaming coming back home from clubs. It never ends. I’ve had so many mental breakdowns from this alone.

Now with all this being said I love going to school, I love the city but one thing with absoulute certainy, I hate dorm living. it truly takes a special type of person to deal with it.

... Read moreDorm living is often romanticized, but for many students, it can lead to stress and dissatisfaction. The lack of personal space can be overwhelming, especially for those who cherish their alone time. Many dorms impose a series of strict regulations, from prohibiting candles to limiting guest visits, which can create additional anxiety. These rules often vary from one dorm to another, but they collectively make it hard for students to feel at home. Noise is another major factor. Between roommates' schedules and late-night parties, the noise level can be incredibly disruptive. Research has shown that continuous exposure to high noise levels can lead to mental health issues. For introverts or those sensitive to overstimulation, dorm life can become a source of significant mental strain. To manage these difficulties, many students choose to relocate off-campus or seek alternative living arrangements that provide more privacy and autonomy. While the convenience and social opportunities of dorms might appeal to some, it's essential to consider whether such an environment aligns with your personal needs and lifestyle. If you're contemplating dorm living, weigh the pros and cons carefully based on your personality and preferences.

I was very lucky with my dorm. I ended up getting a single double (without having to pay extra), I lived between two bathrooms, and my room was right above the lobby so I didn't have to worry about beeing too loud at light. For most of the year my neighbor across the hall wasn't there either! And my other neighbor 1
