It's for science! 😈

... Read moreAs I'm currently immersed in crafting 'Beneath The Chains of Darkness,' Book 2 of my Captive Hearts series, I often get asked what goes into writing a sapphic dark romance. It's truly a fascinating genre to explore, offering so much depth and intensity. For me, the 'dark' in dark romance isn't just about gritty themes; it’s about exploring the complex, often challenging, aspects of love and power dynamics, especially between two women. It means delving into morally gray areas and pushing boundaries, which allows for incredibly rich character development. When it comes to sapphic storytelling techniques, I find it crucial to build a strong emotional foundation. It’s not just about the external conflict; the internal struggles of the characters are paramount. I love using dual perspectives to really get inside both protagonists' heads, especially in an enemies-to-lovers setup. This allows readers to understand their motivations, fears, and the slow burn of attraction that often blossoms from initial animosity. Pacing is key – balancing those moments of tension and angst with glimpses of vulnerability and connection. I often find myself trying to convince myself if a new scene I'm writing for my sapphic dark romance truly hits the mark, ensuring it serves both the plot and the emotional arc. Sapphic character development in this genre is particularly rewarding. My characters are rarely perfect; they have flaws, past traumas, and strong convictions that put them at odds. The journey isn't just about falling in love, but about how they grow and change because of that love, often in a challenging environment. For 'Beneath The Chains of Darkness,' I'm focusing on how my leads, despite their powerful external circumstances, evolve internally, challenging their own beliefs and finding strength in unexpected alliances. It's about showing, not just telling, their transformation. Understanding sapphic romance structure also plays a huge role. While there are common tropes, I always try to put my own spin on them. For an enemies-to-lovers story, the initial conflict needs to be believable and impactful, and the gradual shift towards understanding and affection must feel earned. It's not a straight line; there are often setbacks and moments of doubt, which only make the eventual connection more powerful. The climax usually brings both the external and internal conflicts to a head, forcing the characters to make difficult choices. And even in dark romance, I believe in providing a satisfying, if not conventionally 'happy,' resolution that feels true to the characters and their journey. It's a delicate dance of darkness and light, passion and pain, all woven into a compelling narrative.
