🌷Beautiful Villain Review🌷

I finished Beautiful Villain by Rebecca Kenney, and all I have to say is spicy Great Gatsby retelling with vampires! If that doesn't sell you, then just go read it!!

It was a solid 4 star story for me. I love love love the modern day Great Gatsby retelling and then she added in vampires and I was SOLD!!! Be sure to read the Trigger Warnings before jumping into this story because it does touch on some heavy topics, but I thought it was so well done! The characters are likeable. Jay is 🥵 and the spicy scenes are chef's kiss 👌

... Read moreOkay, so we all know *The Great Gatsby*... an absolute classic, right? But seriously, how many times have you debated with friends: who is the real villain in that story? Is it Tom Buchanan, with his old money arrogance and casual cruelty? Is it Daisy, trapped by her circumstances and ultimately selfish? Or maybe, just maybe, it's the superficial, materialistic society of the Jazz Age itself that’s the true antagonist, slowly chipping away at Gatsby’s dreams? It’s a question that keeps us thinking long after we close the book. That's why I was so intrigued when I picked up Rebecca Kenney's 'Beautiful Villain.' When you dive into a retelling, especially one that throws in a whole new supernatural twist like vampires, it's like the author gets to shake up the entire understanding of who's good, who's bad, and who's just beautifully, tragically flawed. In the original Gatsby, the 'villainy' is often subtle, rooted in privilege and moral decay. But what happens when you introduce creatures of the night into West Egg? The very title, 'Beautiful Villain,' immediately makes you reconsider. It’s not just about finding a bad guy; it’s about exploring the allure and danger that can come packaged together. Is the 'villain' someone outwardly charming but inwardly monstrous, much like some of the characters in Fitzgerald's original? Or does the vampire element allow for a more literal exploration of predatory behavior, where the powerful quite literally feed on the vulnerable, echoing the class divides Gatsby tried to bridge? What's really fascinating about a book like 'Beautiful Villain' is how it can take those grey areas of the classic narrative and paint them in vivid, often 'spicy' new colors. You get to see familiar themes—like obsession, deceit, and the pursuit of an unattainable dream—through a refreshed lens. In a world where some characters are literally immortal and eternally hungry, the stakes for love, betrayal, and power are raised exponentially. It makes you question if the true villain is still a person, or if it becomes something even more primal and inescapable, tied to the very nature of existence and ambition. For me, experiencing 'Beautiful Villain' was a journey into those delicious ambiguities. It pushed me to think about how power corrupts, how love can blind, and how even the most 'beautiful' facades can hide the darkest intentions. If you're someone who loves to dissect character motivations and isn’t afraid of a bit of supernatural spice, exploring Gatsby retellings, especially ones with such a provocative title, is a fantastic way to re-engage with a beloved classic and ponder who truly wears the crown of the 'beautiful villain'.
