MASTITIS SURVIVAL KIT - keep on deck!

If you are having a baby and breastfeeding or pumping-keep these things on deck!! You want to start these things immediately when you feel a duct starting to clog!

I got mastitis right after my daughter came hope from the NICU and let me tell y’all it was HORRIBLE. I really am not a baby about being sick like usually I will just go about my business and suck it up and not get around people when I am sick but this… this is THE. WORST. When I tell you guys I literally could not even roll over in bed I am not exaggerating. I felt like I could not move, I was on fire, I was freezing, just miserable.

I had a pretty bad case because I was pumping and giving my daughter bottles of breastmilk until she was big enough to handle breastfeeding flow (she was 2 months premature) and I wasn’t educated enough on pumping which led to me over-pumping and wayyy overproducing. I was grateful of course to be able to produce that much but in the long run it was not pretty trying to regulate it. It took forever for me to get rid of my mastitis and I ended up started to get better and then going back downhill. I talked to multiple people from lactation at my hospital and then they mother-in-law (who works in the NICU) ended up calling in her big gun lactation specialist friend who recommended these pills and to do both hot AND cold compresses because both are necessary for healing, and this is what ended up helping me. I was glad to have clarification on this after multiple people told me to only do one or the other!

(also I know the cold pack seems unnecessary but trust me when I say normal ice in a bag burns and is way too overstimulating during mastitis)

... Read moreAs a breastfeeding mom, I know firsthand how terrifying and debilitating mastitis can be. It's more than just a clogged duct; it feels like your whole body is fighting against you. But through my own tough journey, I’ve learned that being prepared with the right tools can make all the difference in managing symptoms and speeding up the healing process. Let's dive deeper into how you can effectively use hot and cold therapy, along with other key strategies, to tackle mastitis and clogged ducts head-on. First and foremost, understanding the role of both heat and cold is crucial. My lactation consultant stressed that it's not an 'either/or' situation—both are necessary for different reasons! When you're dealing with a clogged duct or the early stages of mastitis, warm compresses are your best friend. Applying warmth, like with the Frida Mom Instant Heat Breast Warmers or a warm Lansinoh Hot & Cold Breast Therapy Pack, helps to increase circulation to the breast, dilate milk ducts, and encourage milk flow. I've found that applying a warm compress for 10-15 minutes before nursing or pumping can significantly speed up your let-down and help loosen stubborn clogs. The goal is gentle, consistent warmth, not scalding heat, to aid in the movement of milk and alleviate discomfort. Once you’ve nursed or pumped, that’s when cold compresses come into play. After the breast has been emptied, a cold compress, like the Lansinoh Hot & Cold Breast Therapy Packs used cold, can help reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. It's like applying ice to a sprain – it minimizes discomfort and helps bring down any localized swelling that might be contributing to the issue. I learned the hard way that normal ice in a bag can be too harsh and overstimulating, so using a specifically designed cold pack that conforms to your breast gently is a game-changer for effective relief. This combination of heat before and cold after was a true revelation for my healing mastitis process. Beyond compresses, there are other invaluable tools and practices I swear by. Sunflower Lecithin was a lifesaver for me. My lactation specialist recommended this dietary supplement because it helps to emulsify fats in your milk, making it less sticky and reducing the likelihood of clogged ducts forming in the first place. Taking it regularly can be a fantastic preventative measure, especially if you're prone to clogs or oversupply, like I was. It provides that extra support to ensure smoother milk flow. Finally, don't underestimate the power of proper milk removal and self-care. Ensuring your baby has a good, deep latch, or using an efficient pump, is fundamental. If you're pumping, make sure your flange size is correct. Hydration, rest, and wearing comfortable, non-restrictive bras are also critical elements for healing mastitis and preventing recurrences. If symptoms like fever, chills, or red streaks on your breast appear, don't hesitate to contact your doctor immediately. Being proactive and having your mastitis survival kit ready can truly ease the burden of this challenging condition and help you continue your breastfeeding journey with more confidence.

I love those therapy packs. I like to warm them up so they help with letdowns but they were also nice when I got a clogged duct and froze them. Haven’t had mastitis yet though and hopefully won’t at all 🤞🏻
