I weaned off breastfeeding about a month ago and here are the two biggest changes I have noticed!
I knew I would have to workout more and eat a little less after weaning off because I’ve been eating a ton while breastfeeding but geez I was NOT expecting the weight gain to happen that fast! 😂
As for the period return, I definitely should have realized that would come back but I’ve heard a lot of people don’t have a period when they have an IUD so I figured that would be the case and also I haven’t had a period in full for like two years so I just kind of forgot honestly 😅.
... Read moreI totally relate to the 'shock' factor mentioned in the original post when it comes to weaning off breastfeeding! It’s a huge milestone, but no one truly prepares you for how your body can unpredictably shift. Many moms, myself included, find themselves surprised by the changes, especially regarding body weight and hormonal shifts, even after nursing for a significant period like 12 months or more.
Let’s talk about that weight gain. While breastfeeding, our bodies are incredible calorie-burning machines. It's like a built-in furnace, often allowing us to eat more without necessarily gaining weight, or even helping us lose some of that pregnancy weight. Many sources suggest breastfeeding can burn anywhere from 300 to 500 extra calories a day! So, when you stop, that significant calorie expenditure suddenly disappears. I definitely noticed that gaining 7 pounds in the first week after I weaned, as highlighted in the image overlay, was a very real and disheartening experience for me too. Your body isn't burning those extra calories anymore, but your appetite might still be on 'breastfeeding mode.' It’s a tricky balance to adjust to. For me, I found that gradually reducing my food intake and reintroducing gentle exercise helped, but it really took time for my body to figure things out. Some moms also find they retain weight during breastfeeding, holding onto those extra reserves for milk production, and then experience a shift post-weaning.
Then there's the period return! Oh my goodness, I completely empathize with the surprise. Like many, I'd gotten used to the 'period vacation' while breastfeeding, and honestly, it was pretty convenient! I'd heard stories about IUDs preventing periods, so I also hoped for that blissful continuation. But for many of us, once those breastfeeding hormones (prolactin, specifically) start to drop, other hormones like estrogen and progesterone begin to re-regulate. This often signals your body that it's time to start ovulating and menstruating again. It's a clear sign of your body returning to its pre-pregnancy rhythm, but it can feel like a sudden jolt after months or even years of absence. Besides just the period, these hormonal shifts can bring other changes too – sometimes affecting mood, skin, or even hair. I definitely had a few emotional rollercoaster moments as my hormones adjusted, which is a common, though often unspoken, part of the weaning process.
Weaning off breastfeeding, whether it’s a gradual process or a more abrupt one, marks a significant transition for both mom and baby. It’s a journey filled with unexpected turns, and it’s completely normal to feel surprised by how your body reacts. Be kind to yourself, listen to your body, and remember that these changes are simply a testament to the incredible work your body has done.
