Screen Free Toddler Activities

Lately, I’ve been trying to find more screen-free activities for my toddlers. You know it’s time to cut back when they start to quote a Ms. Rachel episode from memory 😂. Some things that have been a hit lately—building a fort with their play cushions (they were so cute sitting in there ‘reading’ together 🥹), block towers that actually kept both kids entertained for a while, and my 2-year-old’s latest obsession: kinetic sand. I know my 1-year-old would just eat it, so she’s on the sidelines for now, but I’m sure she’ll be just as into it when she’s older.

What screen-free activities have been working for your kids lately? Because I could always use more ideas!

Toddlers thrive when they engage in imaginative play, which aids in their cognitive, physical, and social skills. One popular activity is building forts using cushions and blankets—this not only creates a fun space for kids but also encourages cooperative play as they build together. Kinetic sand is another fantastic option. This pliable, moldable material is perfect for sensory play and helps improve fine motor skills. Parents can join in the fun by creating different shapes and structures, or even use tools to add an educational element, like counting or shape recognition. Additionally, simple games with blocks support spatial awareness and problem-solving skills, while storytelling can foster a love for reading and language. Incorporating these activities into daily routines can create a balanced mix of education and fun, promoting healthy screen-free time for toddlers. Parents should also encourage outdoor play, as fresh air and nature stimulate exploration and physical activity. As you explore more activities, consider sharing your ideas with other parents and finding new inspirations from their experiences. By fostering a community of support, you can discover countless ways to engage your little ones away from screens!
