How I Keep My Hair Straight in the Florida Heat

Long time, no see, my lovely ladies :)

I haven’t been too active as my phone broke, but we are back and certainly better than ever :*

I wanted to share with you all how my straight natural journey has been going. I started back in January and have been enjoying it since! I look forward to sharing my routine with you all soon, but here are the results from my most recent straighten after a 3 inch trim (that, I KNOW) is not ever -_-

* I straighten my hair once a week (every Sunday). The first two days, my hair frizzes easy. To prevent this, I will wear my hair in a French Pin or a Claw Clip while out to keep my hair smooth.

*I curl my hair once the texture starts to show. This can be done using a curling wand, heat less curls, whatever works best for you!

* I deep condition using a DIY deep conditioner and I also willl oil my scalp and ends well on Friday + Saturday evening.

* I do touch up my hair… often. A bad habit of mine, but I live in Florida in the HEAT so.

*Keratin protein treatments once a month is a life saver. I will do a protein treatment and then wear my hair curly for a week to help my hair stay moisturized.

*I recently tried Olaplex No 3 and found that it made my hair feel fuller!

... Read moreAs someone living in Florida, I know the struggle is real when it comes to keeping straightened hair looking sleek and frizz-free. My journey to maintaining straight natural hair has definitely been a learning curve, especially with our relentless humidity! While I've shared some of my core strategies, I wanted to dive deeper into those little extra steps that truly make a difference in winning the frizz battle. First off, let’s talk about products beyond Olaplex and Keratin treatments (which, let's be honest, are game-changers!). A crucial part of my humidity defense system is a good pre-styling routine. Before I even think about heat, I make sure to use a humidity-blocking leave-in conditioner or a lightweight anti-frizz serum. These create an invisible shield over each strand, making it harder for moisture in the air to penetrate. Look for ingredients like argan oil, silicone (in moderation!), or even keratin proteins in your styling products. I’ve found that applying a dime-sized amount of serum to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends, seals in the smoothness from the start. Sleeping smart is another huge one. You might have perfectly straight hair when you go to bed, only to wake up with a halo of frizz! To combat this, I swear by a silk or satin pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases can be too abrasive and absorb moisture from your hair, leading to friction and frizz. I also gently tie my hair in a loose bun on top of my head (often called a 'pineapple' for curly hair, but it works for straight hair too!) or a very loose braid. This keeps it off my neck and minimizes contact with the pillow, preserving that fresh flatness. Now, for those unexpected humidity attacks throughout the day – we've all been there! A sudden downpour or stepping out into that thick, soupy air. For immediate touch-ups, I always carry a mini anti-frizz sheet or a small bottle of lightweight hairspray. A quick spritz and a smooth-down with my hands can rescue my style. Another trick I've learned on my Straight Natural Journey is to avoid touching my hair too much. The more you touch it, the more you disturb the cuticle and invite frizz. When I feel a bit of texture returning, sometimes a quick, low-heat pass with a flat iron on just the frizzy sections (after using a heat protectant, of course!) can work wonders without redoing my whole head. Finally, don't underestimate the power of hydration from within. Drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet rich in omega-3s can contribute to healthier, stronger hair that's less prone to frizz. Think of it as building your hair's natural resilience. This entire process, from January 2025 to now, has been about figuring out what truly works for my hair type in this challenging climate, and these extra steps have become indispensable in my routine for consistently frizz-free, straight locks.
