I returned the flip phone: here’s why

When I first got the Razr+ 2025, I was genuinely excited about the flip phone trend making a comeback. The compact design feels great in hand, much smaller than the typical slab smartphones, and it’s refreshing to have something different in a sea of large screens. However, I quickly noticed that these innovative designs are still ironing out kinks in software and hardware. For instance, during daily use, the screen would sometimes stay black after unlocking which was frustrating since I had to repeatedly unfold or lock and unlock the phone to get it to respond. Most concerning was how opening the camera would occasionally cause the whole system to freeze or shut down—obviously not ideal for capturing those spontaneous moments. I appreciate the Android experience but found myself leaning towards Apple’s smoother ecosystem, especially with the new iPhone 17 series just out. The reliability and polished interface from Apple made returning the Razr+ a sensible choice while still within the exchange period. It’s worth mentioning that T-Mobile’s limited color options weren’t a dealbreaker for me since customizing with a case can solve that easily. Overall, my experience reflects the growing pains of foldable phones — the concept is innovative but requires more development before it can reliably replace traditional smartphones. I’m eager to see future Razr releases improve on stability and features, and I might give the flip phone another shot when those upgrades arrive. Until then, sticking with a tried-and-true phone like the iPhone feels like the safest bet for daily use. If you’re considering a flip phone, just be prepared for the occasional bugs and weigh whether you need the latest tech or prefer something with proven reliability. Flip phones are definitely eye-catching and portable, but they might not yet match basic performance needs for everyone right now.
