Did I go too far??
My sister and her family stayed with me for two weeks while their place was getting treated for mold. Love my niblings, but my sister is DEEP into the whole extreme gentle parenting thing like full TED Talk mode for every meltdown.
Kids were jumping on my couch, smearing yogurt on the walls, throwing toys… you know, regular kid chaos but with zero correction because she treats every situation like a “teachable moment.”
The breaking point? Her son poured an entire jug of orange juice on my rug so his dinosaurs could “go swimming.” When I said, “Hey, we don’t do that,” she shushed me and said it would “disrupt his autonomy.”
At that point I told her if “autonomy” means destroying my house, then gentle parenting is BS. We argued, I told them they needed to leave, and she cried while her husband looked like he just got parole.
Now she’s not speaking to me and my mom says I was “insensitive.”
Honestly… was I too harsh?

Family conflicts often escalate because of differing values around parenting styles and boundaries. If emotions run high, taking a moment to listen and validate feelings while expressing your own needs can open the door to compromise. Sometimes, it can help to invite a neutral third party, like a family counselor, to mediate discussions. Ultimately, everyone in the household deserves respect, including the host whose home is affected. Protective actions are not inherently insensitive if they are made thoughtfully. It’s possible to support gentle parenting philosophies while still maintaining house rules that prevent damage and chaos.
