But trust me, there’s so much more to unpack when people ask, 'Is NYC overrated?' Let's talk about getting around. There are also ride-share apps, but nothing beats the speed of the subway when it's running smoothly. Now, about those 'overrated tourist attractions in New York City.' Times Square is definitely at the top of that list for me. Yes, the bright lights are iconic, and it's worth a quick look, but it quickly becomes overwhelming with crowds and characters constantly asking for money. If you want a truly memorable experience that feels more authentic, skip the endless souvenir shops and look for unique spots. Instead of just Times Square, consider a walk through Central Park, exploring the historic streets of Greenwich Village, or catching a lesser-known show off-Broadway. These places offer a deeper dive into the city's culture without the constant crush. Many visitors stick to Manhattan, and that's often where the 'overrated' feeling comes from. Queries like 'is East New York safe' or 'brooklyn dangerous' often pop up, and while I wouldn't recommend every corner of every borough for a first-time tourist, dismissing them entirely means missing out. Instead of 'areas to avoid NYC,' think about 'areas to discover responsibly.' For example, venture into areas like Williamsburg or DUMBO in Brooklyn for amazing food, art, and waterfront views. These are generally safe and offer a different, more local vibe without the same intense tourist crowds. Just remember, as with any major city, common sense and situational awareness are your best guides. And for food and lounges? While I said nothing's out of the ordinary, that's because the best spots aren't always in the guidebooks. The real magic of NYC lies in discovering those hidden gems in neighborhoods like Flushing for authentic Asian cuisine, or the diverse eateries in Jackson Heights. Don't be afraid to wander off the main avenues and let your nose guide you! You'll find incredible flavors and experiences that truly make NYC unique, far from the generic chain restaurants found in the super-touristy areas.
