5 Prohibition when visiting Japan

1. Do not tip (Tipping)
In Japan, unlike many Western countries - tipping is considered inappropriate and can seem rude. Japanese don't usually expect customers to tip, but if thanks, saying "Arigatou gozaimasu" politely would be better suited.
2. Do not wear shoes to the home / temple / ryokang
When entering the "genkan" (door shoe removal zone), take off your shoes, and put on bed shoes or socks inside a traditional home or place. Not taking off your shoes may be seen as disrespectful.
3. Do not speak aloud / talk on the phone on public transport
On Japanese trains or buses, most people are very quiet - talking on the phone loudly or eating loudly can disturb those around them, so put the phone in "quiet" mode and avoid the phone line while commuting.
4. Do not use chopsticks in the wrong manners.
