... Read moreOMG, you guys, I'm so excited to share more about making these Longboy Cheeseburgers! When I first decided to try this recipe, I was a little nervous about how they’d turn out, but honestly, they went over so well in my home. The 'longboy' style is such a fun, easy twist on a classic burger, making serving a breeze, especially for a family dinner. And yes, I served them with my favorite mac and cheese and some delicious baked beans, just like I mentioned earlier!
Based on the instructions I followed (and what I saw in my recipe notes, which included things like Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and that crucial lean ground beef!), getting the patty mixture just right is absolutely key. I always make sure to really incorporate all those flavors – the finely chopped onion, a good dash of Worcestershire sauce, and of course, salt and pepper. What really surprised me, and I think made a huge difference, was adding the cornflakes and a bit of heavy whipping cream. It sounds a little unconventional, right? But trust me, these ingredients help keep the patties incredibly moist and juicy, preventing them from drying out during baking. When you’re dividing the meat up among the French bread/sub buns, make sure each piece is pressed down gently but firmly. This helps the meat adhere to the bun and cook evenly.
Choosing the right bread for your Longboy is also super important. The recipe calls for French bread or sub buns, and I've found that a good quality bun can really elevate the whole experience. I like to lightly toast the cut sides before adding the meat mixture – it adds a lovely texture contrast, even though the main instructions focus on baking. Once they’re in the oven at 350 degrees, it’s just a matter of waiting for that perfect golden brown. And that moment when you add the shredded cheddar cheese in the last five minutes of baking? Pure magic! It melts perfectly over the meat, creating that irresistible gooey, cheesy top. While sharp cheddar cheese is a classic choice, don't be afraid to experiment with other varieties like Monterey Jack or even a blend!
Serving these up with classic sides like mac and cheese and baked beans is always a winner in my book. But if you’re feeling adventurous, imagine these with crispy seasoned fries, a fresh coleslaw, or even a vibrant corn salad for a summer meal. The versatility of these Longboy Cheeseburgers means you can truly make them your own.
I’m already planning my next batch! I’m thinking of adding some homemade caramelized onions or even a few pickled jalapeños right before the cheese goes on for an extra layer of flavor and a little kick. Or how about a secret burger sauce drizzled over the top? The possibilities are endless for customizing these delicious creations. This recipe is definitely a keeper in my weekly rotation, and I genuinely hope you give it a try for your next family gathering. It’s a real crowd-pleaser and surprisingly simple to put together, even for a first-timer like me. You might just rate it higher than a 7/10!
