How often do you wash your hair?

2025/8/14 Edited to

... Read more"So you actually wash your hair once a week?" This is probably the most common question I get when people see my long, healthy hair! For years, I struggled with finding the right wash frequency. I used to think I needed to wash every few days to keep my hair clean, but it always felt dry, and my natural curls never seemed to thrive. It wasn't until I committed to washing long hair once a week that I saw a real transformation. Initially, the idea of washing my hair only once a week felt daunting, especially with my long, thick natural hair. I worried about product buildup, oily roots, and dry ends. But through trial and error, I've developed a routine that not only works but has significantly improved my hair's health and manageability. If you're wondering if you can truly manage washing long hair once a week, let me tell you, it's absolutely possible and worth it! Here’s a glimpse into how I make my weekly #washday successful: 1. The Pre-Poo is Your Best Friend: Before I even think about shampoo, I slather my hair with a nourishing oil blend (like olive oil and castor oil) or a deep conditioner. I let it sit for at least an hour, sometimes overnight. This step is crucial for protecting my strands from the stripping effects of shampoo and making detangling a breeze. 2. Thorough Cleansing is Key: Since I'm only washing once a week, I make sure to properly cleanse my scalp and hair. I use a clarifying shampoo (once a month) and a moisturizing shampoo for my regular weekly washes. I focus on my scalp, gently massaging to lift any product buildup or dirt. It’s important to rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear. 3. Deep Conditioning is Non-Negotiable: After shampooing, a good deep conditioner is essential. I apply it generously, focusing on my ends, and then cover my hair with a shower cap for 20-30 minutes, sometimes adding heat for better penetration. This step replenishes moisture and keeps my long hair soft and pliable throughout the week. 4. Leave-in & Seal: Once I rinse out the deep conditioner, I apply a leave-in conditioner followed by a hair oil or butter to seal in the moisture. This layering technique is vital for maintaining hydration, especially for long hair that can be prone to dryness. 5. Styling for Longevity: My styling choices for the week are strategic. I often opt for protective styles like braids, twists, or a simple bun that can last several days. This reduces daily manipulation and helps preserve moisture. When I do wear my hair out, I make sure the style is one that holds up well, often using light styling products that don't cause heavy buildup. This way, my hair stays fresh and presentable right up until the next wash day. 6. Mid-Week Refresh (if needed): On day 4 or 5, if my scalp feels a little itchy or my curls need a boost, I might do a targeted scalp refresh with witch hazel on a cotton pad or a light spritz of diluted leave-in conditioner on my ends. I avoid heavy products that would counteract my once-a-week wash goal. By embracing this once-a-week wash routine, I’ve noticed my hair is stronger, less prone to breakage, and my curls are more defined. It’s also a huge time-saver! If you're looking to optimize your hair care and extend your wash days, I highly recommend giving a weekly routine a try. It takes a bit of experimentation to find what works for your hair type, but the results can be truly amazing. Trust me, your long hair will thank you!
