✨It’s Giving Anxiety, No So Demure 🥴🤌🏾

It sounds like so many of us can relate to that feeling, especially when you have so many plans but your brain just says 'nope!' I’ve definitely had those days where my anxiety and ADHD team up to keep me glued to the couch, even when I desperately want to be out enjoying life. It’s a real struggle, and you're absolutely not alone in coping with ADHD & anxiety when it comes to getting out of the house. For me, one of the biggest game-changers has been breaking things down into tiny, almost ridiculously small steps. If the thought of going to the park feels overwhelming, I don't even think about the park. I just tell myself, 'Okay, let's just put on socks.' Then, 'Okay, now let's find shoes.' Next thing you know, you're dressed without even realizing you've overcome the initial inertia. It's about tricking your brain a little! Another thing that helps me calm my anxiety is creating a 'safe exit' strategy. If I'm going to a social event or even just a busy store, I plan out exactly when and how I'll leave if I start feeling overwhelmed. Knowing I have an escape route makes it less daunting to even start. Sometimes it's as simple as telling myself, 'I'll stay for 30 minutes, and if I'm not feeling it, I can leave, no questions asked.' This takes a lot of pressure off. For managing the physical sensations of anxiety, I've found deep breathing exercises incredibly helpful. There are tons of apps out there that guide you, but even just focusing on a slow inhale through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and a slow exhale through your mouth can make a huge difference. I try to do this before I even think about stepping out the door. It helps to ground me and calm my nervous system. And speaking of ADHD, sometimes the brain fog and lack of motivation are tied directly to it. I try to make sure I'm well-hydrated and have had some protein before attempting anything strenuous, mentally or physically. A quick walk around the block, even if it's just to the mailbox, can sometimes kickstart my energy. It's not about forcing yourself into a full workout, just gentle movement to get the blood flowing. Also, don't underestimate the power of a good playlist! Curate a playlist of upbeat, motivating songs that make you feel good. Sometimes just putting on my 'get-stuff-done' playlist can shift my mood and give me that little push I need. It acts as a mental cue. Finally, remember that perfection isn't the goal. If you only manage to get out for an hour instead of the whole day, that's still a win! Celebrate those small victories. Being a black girl in her 30s coping with anxiety (and ADHD!) comes with its own unique layers of pressure, and being kind to yourself is paramount. Some days you slay, some days you chill, and both are okay. The important thing is showing up for yourself and trying again tomorrow. What are your go-to calming rituals?
