A pet parent dealing with an emergency is so scary! 💔🐾

As pet parents, we know our dogs better than anyone and I’m sharing our story in the hopes that we’ll help other pet parents! 🥹

Back in 2017, Baby started acting a little differently. For about a week and a half, she seemed unusually tired and withdrawn. Not sick enough to make us panic, but not quite herself either. Looking back, it was the first sign that something was very wrong.

Then everything changed.

She became completely lethargic. She could barely keep her eyes open. She had no interest in food or water and seemed like all she wanted to do was sleep. Even when I reached down to pet her, she struggled to open her eyes. Her head would jolt and she felt cold to the touch.

I knew something wasn't right.

We rushed her to our local @Banfield Pet Hospital where bloodwork revealed several abnormalities, including dangerously abnormal potassium levels. At the time, they didn't have the ACTH stimulation test available in-house (they do now) so we were immediately referred to @cvsgreensboro Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Greensboro for further testing and emergency treatment!🤒

That's when we got the official diagnosis: Addison's disease.

By the time we arrived at the first vets office Baby was already in an Addisonian crisis — a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body doesn't produce enough of the hormones it needs to function properly.

After 2-3 days of hospitalization, treatment, and stabilization, I was finally able to bring her home and just like that, she was back to being my sweet Baby. ❤️

Today, eight years later, we're still successfully managing her Addison's disease with daily prednisone and monthly Zycortal injections. While the diagnosis was terrifying, it taught us that Addison's disease can be managed with the right pet care, medication and monitoring!😌

I'm sharing this story because I know how scary and overwhelming a new diagnosis can feel. Over the years, we've learned so much about managing Addison's disease, spotting potential issues early, and even finding ways to save money on medications and treatment. These are some of the most valuable pet parent tips we've learned throughout our journey.

If your dog has been diagnosed with Addison's disease, you're not alone. We hope Baby's journey can help other families navigate this condition with a little more confidence and a little less fear. ❤️🐾

Thank you to the doctors, specialists, pharmacies, offices, and brands that have helped us care for Baby throughout her Addison's journey:

... Read moreAs a pet parent, dealing with an Addisonian crisis can be one of the most terrifying experiences you face. From personal experience, recognizing early subtle signs—like your dog seeming unusually tired, withdrawn, or less interested in food—can make all the difference. Addison's disease, also known as hypoadrenocorticism, causes the adrenal glands to fail in producing enough vital hormones, leading to symptoms like lethargy, electrolyte imbalances such as abnormal potassium levels, and in severe cases, life-threatening crises. Emergency treatment often involves hospitalization to stabilize the dog with intravenous fluids, hormone replacement, and close monitoring. Since Addison's disease can mimic other illnesses, initial diagnosis may require specialized tests like the ACTH stimulation test. Once diagnosed, management includes daily corticosteroid medications such as prednisone, which help replace missing hormones, and monthly injections like Zycortal to regulate electrolyte balance. Over the years, I’ve learned that consistency in medication, regular veterinary check-ups, and careful observation of your dog's behavior are key to successfully managing Addison's disease. It’s also important to develop a good relationship with a knowledgeable veterinary specialist or hospital that can support you during emergencies or flare-ups. Additionally, finding cost-effective ways to obtain medications, such as reputable online pet pharmacies like Chewy, can help ease the financial burden of long-term treatment. Sharing experiences with other pet parents through communities and support groups provides emotional support and practical advice. The journey with Addison’s disease is challenging, but with prompt detection, proper care, and ongoing monitoring, dogs can live happy, fulfilling lives. Always trust your instincts—if you notice anything unusual about your pet’s health, seek veterinary advice without delay. This proactive approach can save lives and help maintain the precious bond with your furry companion.

Maple and Mochi are my first pets I’ve had as an adult, so there’s been a lot of learning happening! For my the hardest part has been researching the “bad” stuff. Ferrets are sensitive animals, and adrenal disease is pretty common. It makes me sad to think this could happen to my tiny babies, but r
