Portion Control on the Go

I love bringing snacks with me on the go. From fresh fruits, to Chex mix, and even candy. Especially as a mommy it never hurts to have a little food on hand. Lord knows when the belly’s get rumbling, moods shift FAST.

I found these adorable purple reusable zip locks, in the back to school section at my local Target. My goal is to reuse these for my daily snacking so I’m using less single use zip locks. They also came in several other colors and designs if purple isn’t quite your color. I think these would also do fantastic in lunch boxes!!

I've found that one of the biggest game-changers for my energy levels – and honestly, my mood – is having a stash of healthy, portion-controlled snacks ready to go. You know the feeling: that mid-afternoon slump, or the sudden hunger pangs that make you reach for anything convenient, often not the healthiest choice. That’s exactly why I started focusing on smart snacking, and it has made a world of difference! One of the best lessons I've learned is that 'healthy snack' doesn't automatically mean 'unlimited snack.' Even the healthiest foods need to be enjoyed in moderation, and that's where portion control comes in. For example, fresh fruits like grapes are fantastic – full of natural sugars for energy and hydration. But have you ever sat down with a big bag of grapes and realized you've eaten half of it without thinking? Been there! My personal rule of thumb for grapes is usually about a cup, or what fits comfortably in one of my reusable snack bags. It's enough to satisfy that sweet craving and give me a boost without going overboard. The same goes for delicious berries like strawberries and blueberries (which I love adding to my kids' lunchboxes too!). A small handful, perhaps half a cup, is usually a perfect pick-me-up. Beyond grapes and berries, thinking about other healthy options to pre-portion has been a lifesaver. A small handful of almonds or walnuts provides healthy fats and protein, keeping you fuller longer. For me, that usually translates to about 1/4 cup. Carrots or cucumber sticks with a tiny container of hummus are another go-to. I also find that pre-slicing an apple and pairing it with a tablespoon of peanut butter in a separate, smaller compartment (or just keeping the peanut butter jar at home) makes for a satisfying and balanced snack. The key is to prepare these ahead of time, so when hunger strikes, the healthy choice is the easy choice. This is precisely why those reusable snack bags I mentioned earlier have become my absolute favorite kitchen gadget. They aren't just cute; they're incredibly practical for mastering portion control. Instead of grabbing a whole bag of pretzels or a giant apple, I can fill one of these purple (or whatever color you fancy!) pouches with exactly the right amount of grapes, a mix of berries, or even some homemade Chex mix if I'm feeling indulgent. They’re durable, easy to clean, and seeing them lined up in the fridge or pantry, pre-filled with nutritious goodies, makes healthy eating feel like less of a chore and more like a smart habit I've already established for myself and my family. I used to wrestle with single-use plastic bags, constantly feeling guilty about the waste. Switching to these reusable options was a small change that made a big impact, both environmentally and for my portion control goals. They're perfect for throwing into a purse, a backpack, or yes, even those school lunch boxes. Just fill them up, zip them closed, and you're good to go! After use, a quick rinse or a spin in the dishwasher makes them ready for the next day's snacks. It’s a simple system that truly helps keep me on track with healthy eating.
