Tips for training your pup to make potty outside

In NYC, I had to get clearance from my vet to go on the sidewalks because they’re so dirty! Here are my tips for potty training outside:

💦 take your dog out every 2 hours and be consistent

💦 practice walking inside with a leash and harness to get them comfortable. It’s a weird sensation at first!

💦 reward them with verbal praise (I used “good potty”) AND treats as soon as they make potty!

💦 slowly increase the time between walks until they can hold it for longer periods of time

... Read morePotty training your puppy can be challenging but incredibly rewarding. Start by ensuring your puppy has received veterinary clearance to go outside, especially in busy urban areas like NYC, to avoid health risks. It’s crucial to establish a regular schedule; taking your puppy out every two hours can greatly reduce accidents indoors. Once outside, allow your puppy to explore their surroundings while on a leash and harness, which can feel unfamiliar at first. Indoor practice can help them acclimate. When they successfully potty outside, reward them immediately with verbal praise and treats, fostering a positive association. Over time, gradually extend the intervals between potty breaks to help them learn to hold it longer. Consistency and patience are key to successful training. Don’t forget to consider your puppy’s behavior; every dog is different and may need varying amounts of time to adjust. Utilize positive reinforcement, stay calm, and watch for signs that they need to go to ensure a smooth process.

Ugh I’m so ready to house train my pup but she’s barely over 8 weeks, weighs about 2 lbs… MAYBE… and it’s like 0°-10° outside right now with snow and ice. I’m afraid she’s gonna get frostbite lol. Pad training right now and earlier, she went to it on her own and pottied! WIN OF THE DAY!
