Living through the COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably altered our perception of the world. Many of us fondly remember pre-COVID days as times filled with social connection, freedom to travel, and a sense of security in daily life. The pandemic brought unprecedented changes—lockdowns, economic struggles, and social isolation—all contributing to a collective feeling that "the world is in shambles." This upheaval, however, reflects deeper human tendencies highlighted in discussions about politics and happiness. As observed, human nature is complex; greed, self-focus, and the desire to be right often fuel conflict and division. Yet, despite these flaws, moments of kindness, community support, and resilience also emerged strongly during the crisis. Personally, I found that the pandemic underscored the importance of appreciating small pleasures and interpersonal connections that were once taken for granted. While war, famine, and hate have long existed, the current global crisis magnified these issues through economic hardships and political tensions exacerbated by stress and uncertainty. Adapting to this "new normal" involves balancing awareness of these global challenges with personal actions that promote well-being and empathy. For instance, focusing on mental health, fostering community support networks, and seeking joy in everyday activities can help counteract feelings of hopelessness. Ultimately, while the world faces ongoing difficulties, reflecting on the pre-COVID era inspires a collective desire for a more stable, compassionate future. Learning from the past and embracing both the good and bad in humanity allows us to move forward with a better understanding of ourselves and others.
