What's my "Autistic Superpower"?
Autism (much like neurotypicality) comes with pros and cons. Throw in some ADHD hyperfocus and things get wacky. On a serious note, it is a stereotype that all autistics have savant abilities - or that those that do will have an ability that has value in the eyes of our capitalistic society. Many of us (especially without comorbid intellectual disabilities), however, DO have a "spikey skill profile", i.e. we can lack skills allistics think of as standard & easy yet readily excel at things allistics find difficult, which can cause allistics to both over and underestimate our capacities. We often hear "You're so smart, I know you can do this!" or "How can you be top of you class in math but not know how to tie your shoes?" or "If you just applied yourself.", or on the other end people think we are incompetent or incapable and then are shocked to see we surpass them with ease at something they struggle with. Neurosdiversity is a beautiful and necessary part of our species, learn to embrace it... but maybe fight the hyperfocus when it wants to go into 4 AM rabbit holes about Githyanki belly buttons... #actuallyautistic #audhd #gamermom #humor #baldursgate3
In today's society, the term "Autistic Superpower" is often misunderstood. Many people falsely equate autism with savant abilities, leading to unrealistic expectations and assumptions. Instead, it’s essential to appreciate the diverse skills and perspectives that neurodivergent individuals bring to the table. A unique aspect of autism is the 'spikey skill profile.' Autistic individuals might struggle with everyday tasks but excel in specialized areas that require deep focus or unconventional thinking. This divergence can lead to misunderstandings in social contexts where expectations don't align with the individual's abilities. Furthermore, the intersection of autism and ADHD can create a complex but fascinating dynamic, often fueling hyperfocus on specific interests. Embracing these traits can lead to remarkable insights, creativity, and problem-solving capabilities that contribute significantly to various fields, from the arts to sciences. It's time for society to move beyond myths and acknowledge the value of neurodiversity. By fostering an inclusive environment that recognizes different abilities, we can build a more accepting world that values each individual's contributions, ultimately enriching the tapestry of human experience.

Does it make sense? Should she have a belly button?
