Take Control of Your Workout...
Have you ever worried about your next workout or race?
What if you just decided to not worry about it, and to focus on what might go well?
Of course, focus on the execution because that's a huge part of performing at your highest level, but don't allow your worries to dictate how it's going to go.
Lean into strengths and focus on the next move.
While doing this, decide to succeed.
Take control of your workout and decide to succeed.

One of the most powerful ways I've found to improve my workout and race performance is to shift my mindset from worry to positive focus. It's natural to feel concerned about upcoming races or intense training sessions, but constantly fixating on what might go wrong often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead, I try to remind myself to lean into my existing strengths and focus on the very next step—whether that's a mile, a hill, or a recovery period. Practicing mindfulness during workouts has helped me stay present and execute each moment intentionally. For example, when running on trails, I deliberately concentrate on my footing and breathing rather than getting overwhelmed by the overall distance or time. This helps reduce anxiety and improves performance. I've also found that making a conscious decision to succeed—rooted in belief rather than hope—can change how the entire workout unfolds. This was inspired by advice from mindset coaches like Matt Wilpers of Finish Stronger Mindset Coaching, who emphasizes owning your objective mentally before physically striving for it. In incorporating these principles into my ultra running training, I've noticed better consistency and resilience, especially on difficult terrain or long distances. If you’re preparing for ultramarathons or trail runs, try embracing this approach: don’t let pre-race fears dictate your experience; instead, focus on executing your plan, trust your strengths, and decide that success is your outcome. By committing mentally and focusing on each move, workouts become more efficient and rewarding. Remember that controlling your mental state is just as important as physical training. Whether you’re a seasoned ultrarunner or a beginner, this mindset shift can help you finish stronger and enjoy the journey more.
