From my experience finishing with a time of 25:22:53 on such a challenging course—where I placed 4th female—it's clear that reflection after the race is crucial for growth.
One of the most impactful lessons I learned is the importance of detailed post-race questionnaires. These tools helped me pinpoint what strategies worked well, such as pacing and nutrition choices, as well as areas that needed adjustment. For instance, evaluating my crew and pacer support gave me insights on how timely encouragement and logistical help can boost performance in the toughest moments, like the steep descents around Mount Doom.
Mindset is another critical factor. Shifting from a goal-oriented focus to an experience-oriented mindset helped me maintain resilience during difficult segments of the race. Instead of fixating on finishing time, embracing each segment as a unique challenge allowed me to stay motivated and mentally strong. Reflection questions post-race reinforce this growth mindset by encouraging honest assessment of mental highs and lows encountered during the event.
Nutrition wins and misses also became apparent through this process. Ultra events demand precise fueling strategies; what works in training may not always translate on race day. For me, tracking nutrition intake, hydration, and energy levels allowed me to adjust for future races. Coupling these findings with pre-race questionnaires creates a comprehensive blueprint for continued improvement.
For fellow ultra runners chasing bigger goals, I highly recommend adopting a systematic approach to race reflection. Combining structured questionnaires with personal journaling can unlock new insights into pacing, mental endurance, crew dynamics, and nutrition. Sharing these reflections within a coaching community or with like-minded runners further enriches the learning experience.
Lastly, embracing the awkward, tough moments—like the caution required on technical descents and variable terrain—adds to the ultra running growth journey. The Rabid Raccoon 100 taught me that detailed post-race analysis is as valuable as the training itself, and this mindset inspired me to keep pushing my limits for future races.
