I honestly kind of liked the first book. It was all over the place but I thought it was fun! However I feel like the second book did not represent the character at all and was just a mess. I wanted an independent, strong woman and instead we got a feisty pushover who let a man take over. Absolutely hated the second book so I didn’t even bother to start the third because I’m worried we’re going to lose a whole character’s personality again. 🙁
... Read moreOkay, so after my initial post about *Ice Planet Barbarians*, I wanted to chat a bit more about what makes this series by Ruby Dixon so popular, and why it draws so many readers in – even if I had some reservations about Book 2! If you've been seeing these books pop up everywhere and wondering, 'Is Ice Planet Barbarians spicy?' or 'What's the hype about?', let me break it down from my perspective.
First off, let's talk genre. This is quintessential spicy alien romance, often lumped into that 'stranded on a distant planet' trope, but with its own unique twist. Human women crash-land on a frozen, alien world inhabited by the Metlak, a species of blue-skinned barbarians with horns and tails. It's definitely a wild ride, and the core premise of survival, cultural clashes, and fated mates is super engaging. For those who love a bit of sci-fi mixed with steamy romance, it definitely ticks those boxes.
And yes, to answer one of the big questions I see: 'Is Ice Planet Barbarians spicy?' Absolutely! These books are known for their explicit content and steamy scenes. If you're looking for open-door romance with strong, possessive (but ultimately caring) alien heroes, you'll find it here. It's not just fade-to-black, so be prepared for that! This is probably why so many people get into the series – it delivers on the 'spicy' promise.
When I started my journey, I picked up the first book, *Ice Planet Barbarians*, on my Kindle. The covers themselves are quite distinctive – you often see them featuring the hulking blue aliens and their human counterparts, immediately giving you a sense of the genre. I remember looking at the series covers on my Kindle, seeing Barbarian Alien at 79% complete and Barbarian Lover waiting, and thinking 'Was It Worth It?' after my Book 2 experience. There are quite a few books in the series, but the official 'Ice Planet Barbarians reading order' usually starts with the main couple, Georgie and Vax, and then branches out to other couples. Each book focuses on a different pairing, so while they're interconnected, you get a new romance story every time.
The world-building, while not overly complex, is charming in its own way. The frozen planet of Not-Hoth (as some fans affectionately call it) and the Metlak culture, with their unique biology and customs, create a fun backdrop. The way the humans adapt to their new environment and learn about the Metlak, particularly their 'sakhui' bond, is a central part of the appeal. Even with my issues with book 2, I can appreciate the creativity Ruby Dixon put into making this world.
So, despite my personal struggle with Barbarian Alien changing my perception of a character I initially loved, I can see why the Ice Planet Barbarians series has such a dedicated fanbase. If you're into unique alien romance, don't mind some intense spice, and enjoy a blend of sci-fi and romance tropes, it might still be worth checking out the first book to see if it resonates with you. Just be prepared for a long series journey if you get hooked!
