... Read moreI recently embarked on a fun and rewarding crafting adventure, and let me tell you, making a colorful DIY crayon wreath was even more enjoyable than I imagined! When I first saw the idea, I thought, 'This would be such a unique and thoughtful present, especially as a Great Teacher Gift!' And it truly was. It's surprisingly simple, uses readily available materials, and the result is a vibrant, personal piece of art or decor. Here’s how I put mine together, along with some tips I picked up along the way. First, gathering your materials is key. You'll need two embroidery hoops – I used an 8-inch and a 10-inch, making sure one was about 2 inches smaller than the other. This creates a nice base for the crayons when you sandwich them. Then, the stars of the show: crayons! I found that three boxes of 24-count crayons were perfect for a full, lush wreath. You’ll also want a small chalkboard, some cute ribbon (I had a school-themed bow with books and apples that worked perfectly!), and a reliable hot glue gun with plenty of glue sticks. The first step is preparing your embroidery hoops. Separate both hoops. You'll primarily be using the inner ring of the larger hoop and the outer ring of the smaller hoop. My goal was to create a sturdy circular frame for the crayons. I started by gluing the smaller hoop (the outer ring) directly on top of the larger hoop (the inner ring) to give it some depth and a stronger base. Make sure they are perfectly centered. Now for the fun part: arranging the crayons! This is where you can let your creativity shine. I decided to go for a beautiful rainbow of crayons, organizing them by color. I found it easiest to start by laying out my desired pattern on a flat surface first to ensure I had enough of each color and liked the flow. Once I had my pattern, I began gluing. With the hot glue gun, carefully place a dot of glue on the back of each crayon, near the bottom, and attach it to the embroidery hoop frame. I glued them vertically, side-by-side, making sure they were snug against each other. Some people glue them at an angle, which also looks fantastic – it just depends on the look you're going for! I made sure the tips of the crayons were facing outwards, creating that iconic wreath shape. This step takes a bit of patience to ensure all the crayons are evenly spaced and securely attached. Once all your crayons are glued down, it’s time to add the personal touches. I centered my small chalkboard in the middle of the wreath. I wrote "Great Teacher Gift!" on it, just like the image showed, using a white chalk marker. It really tied into the school theme. Then, I added my decorative ribbon. I tied a lovely bow at the top, securing it with a dab of hot glue to ensure it stayed in place. You could also hang a small charm, a wooden apple, or even a personalized tag. My biggest tip for anyone trying this DIY crayon wreath is to use a good quality hot glue gun and plenty of glue sticks. Also, don't be afraid to mix and match crayon brands or even use broken crayons for a more rustic look. If you're not making it for a teacher, consider other themes! You could use pastels for a baby shower gift, bright primary colors for a child's art room, or even just shades of one color for a minimalist aesthetic. The possibilities are endless! This craft project was not only easy but also incredibly satisfying. It’s a wonderful way to create something handmade and heartfelt, whether it’s for a special educator or just to brighten up your own space. I highly recommend giving this crayon art project a try – you'll love the colorful outcome!
