Momentum Monday - Deadlines Beat Procrastination!

Deadlines work because they turn an abstract intention into a concrete event — activating our brain’s stress and reward systems in just the right measure to focus effort.

For neurotypicals: it’s mainly about structure and planning.

For neurodivergents: it’s often about stimulation, urgency, or clarity.

For Neurotypical People

Deadlines work mainly because they:

> Create urgency and focus.

The brain recognises the time constraint and releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which sharpen attention and reduce distractions.

> Trigger prioritisation.

When a clear endpoint exists, the brain sorts tasks automatically — what must be done now versus what can wait.

> Provide structure.

A deadline gives external form to an otherwise abstract goal. It helps people break the work into chunks and track progress.

> Offer closure and reward.

Completing something before a deadline gives a sense of accomplishment and a dopamine hit — which reinforces the behaviour next time.

For Neurodivergent People (e.g., ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia)

Deadlines can work for similar but sometimes more extreme reasons:

> Time perception differences.

Many neurodivergent people struggle with “time blindness” — the difficulty of sensing how long something will take or how close a deadline really is. When a deadline becomes imminent, the pressure suddenly makes the time “real”, flipping the brain into action mode.

> Dopamine-driven motivation.

Especially in ADHD, the brain’s dopamine regulation system means routine tasks don’t generate enough reward to start. A looming deadline adds excitement, stress, or novelty — finally releasing enough dopamine to push through the task.

> External accountability.

Deadlines act as external scaffolding — they compensate for inconsistent internal motivation or executive function challenges by providing a clear external trigger.

> Clarity and boundaries.

Some neurodivergent people (especially autistic individuals) respond well to clear rules or defined time frames. It removes uncertainty about when to stop or how “good” is good enough.
