My beloved indoor plants also get special attention. The images reminded me about this! I make sure they're well-watered, but not overwatered, right before I leave. For longer trips, I've even tried those self-watering globes or asked a trusted friend to come by. I also always remember to close the blinds. This isn't just for security; it also helps protect my plants from direct sunlight exposure while I'm away, preventing them from drying out too quickly or getting scorched. Beyond the kitchen and bathroom, I do a quick sweep of the entire apartment. Unplugging appliances isn't just about saving energy; it also guards against potential power surges or electrical issues. Think beyond just the toaster and coffee maker – phone chargers, lamps, even the TV. Every little bit helps. And that open suitcase on my rug? It's a reminder to pack strategically, making sure I have everything I need so I don't have to rush home for a forgotten item. I also take out all the trash, of course, but I also do a quick check of the fridge for any perishables that might expire and cause odors. A quick wipe of the fridge shelves and throwing out any old food prevents a truly nasty welcome home. And those dirty clothes I mentioned? Getting them into the washing machine or at least a sealed hamper means no stale smells permeating my space. Finally, a quick security check: Are all windows tightly shut? Is the main door double-locked? If you receive a lot of mail, consider putting a hold on it or asking a neighbor to collect it.
