my quick AM routine as a nurse
Starting the day as an oncology nurse can be incredibly demanding, especially with long shifts stretching from early morning until evening. Over time, I've learned that establishing a quick yet effective morning routine not only boosts my energy but also helps me maintain healthy skin despite the stress and frequent hand washing that comes with the job. One essential part of my routine is skincare focused on hydration and protection. Given the constant use of sanitizers and gloves, my skin tends to dry out easily; therefore, applying an ultra-moisturising lotion before heading out is a must. This small step helps prevent irritation and keeps my hands feeling soft throughout my shift. In addition to skincare, I prioritize mental preparation by spending a few quiet moments practicing mindfulness or deep breathing. This helps me stay centered and ready to handle whatever challenges the day may bring. Nutrition also plays a key role in my morning regimen. I make it a point to eat a balanced breakfast rich in protein and healthy fats to sustain my energy. Simple meals like oatmeal with nuts or eggs and avocado provide long-lasting fuel. Lastly, I organize my work essentials the night before to streamline my morning and avoid unnecessary stress. This prep includes packing snacks, filling water bottles, and ensuring my uniform is ready, which all contribute to a smoother start. From my experience, even a quick, well-thought-out routine can significantly improve both physical and mental resilience for healthcare professionals facing taxing shifts. Sharing these tiny self-care habits might inspire others in similar roles to prioritize their wellbeing alongside their demanding responsibilities.
