... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to dive a little deeper into one of my favorite, super effective (and often overlooked!) bodyweight arm exercises: reverse arm circles. When I first started focusing on my arm strength, I was doing all the usual dumbbell stuff like bicep curls and tricep kickbacks, which are great, but I felt like I was missing something for overall shoulder mobility and endurance. That's when I rediscovered the magic of arm circles, especially the reverse kind! So, what exactly are reverse arm circles? They're a fantastic, low-impact exercise that really targets your shoulders, upper back, and even helps improve posture. Here’s how I do them to get the most out of each rep: Stand Tall: Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, spine long, and core gently engaged. Your arms should be extended straight out to your sides, parallel to the floor, forming a 'T' shape with your body. Palms Down (or Up!): You can start with palms facing down, or for a slightly different feel, try palms facing up. I usually alternate between weeks to hit different angles. Small, Controlled Circles: Now, start making small, controlled circles backward with your arms. Think about drawing tiny circles in the air behind you. The key here is control and *deliberation*, not speed. Keep your shoulders down and away from your ears. Gradually Increase Size: As you get comfortable, you can gradually increase the size of the circles, but always maintain control. Don't let momentum take over. Focus on feeling the muscles in your shoulders and upper back working. Breathing: Remember to breathe deeply throughout the exercise. I usually aim for 30-60 seconds of continuous circles, or about 15-20 repetitions in one direction before switching. Why do I love them so much? For one, they're incredible for warming up your shoulder joints before a heavier lift, or as a fantastic burnout at the end of a bodyweight session. They really help with shoulder mobility, which is so important for everyday activities and preventing injuries. Plus, if you're like me and spend a lot of time at a desk, they're brilliant for counteracting that forward-slumped posture and strengthening the muscles that pull your shoulders back. You'll feel a burn surprisingly quickly, which is how you know they're working! I typically include reverse arm circles in my bodyweight arm workouts, right alongside push-ups and tricep dips. They're a perfect complement to the more intense exercises. Sometimes, I even do a few sets as an active recovery between sets of bicep curls or shoulder presses during my dumbbell days. It's amazing how much they contribute to that overall 'toned' look and feel. If you're struggling with shoulder pain or just want to add a low-impact, effective exercise to your routine, definitely give reverse arm circles a try. You'll be amazed at the subtle but significant strength and mobility gains you'll experience, just like I have!
