... Read moreHey everyone, following up on my passion for feeding my 11 Country Mountain Mastiffs the best possible way, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some questions I often get about Mastiff diets and general care. While I'm a huge advocate for raw feeding, I know it's not for everyone, so let's explore some other vital aspects of keeping these magnificent giants healthy! Feeding a Growing Mastiff Puppy: This is perhaps one of the most critical stages. Mastiff puppies grow incredibly fast, and their nutritional needs are unique. Unlike smaller breeds, rapid growth can be detrimental to their developing joints. When I started with my first Mastiff pups, I focused on a balanced diet specifically formulated for large breed puppies. Whether you choose raw or high-quality kibble, ensure it has the right calcium-to-phosphorus ratio to support slow, steady bone growth. I typically feed my puppies 3-4 times a day, gradually reducing to twice a day as they mature. Getting their "Feeding Time" right in those early months sets them up for life. English Mastiffs Feeding Frequency (and other Adults): For adult Mastiffs, like my Fila, Presa, and English Mastiffs, I typically feed them twice a day. This helps manage their metabolism and reduces the risk of bloat, a serious concern for deep-chested breeds. The amount, of course, depends on their activity level, age, and individual metabolism. With raw feeding, it's often calculated as a percentage of their body weight. If you're feeding kibble, always follow the guidelines on the bag, adjusting as needed based on your dog's condition. Diet for Mastiff Mixes: Queries like 'Staffy x Mastiff' or 'Cane Corso mixed with English Mastiff' are common. When you have a crossbreed, it's essential to consider the dietary needs of both parent breeds. For example, a Staffy's higher energy might mean slightly more calories than a pure Mastiff, while a Cane Corso mix might also benefit from joint-supporting nutrients. Itโ€™s all about observing your unique dog and consulting with your vet to tailor their diet. Best Dog Food for Mastiffs (Beyond Raw): If raw isn't your path, look for high-quality commercial dog foods specifically designed for large or giant breeds. These often contain ingredients that support joint health (glucosamine, chondroitin) and omega fatty acids for skin and coat. Avoid artificial fillers, colors, and preservatives. I always read labels carefully to understand the protein sources and nutrient balance. Sleep and Overall Well-being: A well-fed Mastiff is a happy and well-rested Mastiff! Good nutrition directly impacts their energy levels, coat health, and even their sleep patterns. If you notice your 'sleep dog' is restless or lethargic, reviewing their diet can be a good first step, alongside a vet check. My goal is always to provide a holistic approach to their care, and diet is the cornerstone of that. Ultimately, whether you're feeding a Mastiff puppy or an adult, purebred or a magnificent mix, understanding their unique needs and providing consistent, high-quality nutrition is key to their long, healthy, and happy life.
