non toxic kitchen swaps for beginners!

2024/12/6 Edited to

... Read moreEmbarking on a non-toxic journey in the kitchen might seem daunting at first, but trust me, it’s one of the most rewarding changes you can make for your health and home. When I first started researching, I realized how many everyday items contained potentially harmful chemicals. The good news is, making these swaps can be surprisingly easy and impactful! One of the first areas I tackled was cleaning products. It's alarming to think about what's in many conventional sprays and detergents. I learned to look out for phthalates, parabens, and harsh sulfates, which are often found in traditional cleaners and can be endocrine disruptors. That's why I started exploring brands like Attitude Living cleaning products. Their commitment to natural, plant-based ingredients really resonated with me. Finding a good, effective, and safe dishwashing liquid was a game-changer, and their rinse aid options are fantastic. For my dishwasher, switching to Attitude Nature+ dishwasher tablets made a huge difference. They clean just as well as conventional tablets but without the worries of toxic residues on my dishes. It’s comforting to know that what I’m using to clean my kitchen isn’t adding more chemicals to my space or the environment. Next up was cookware, a topic that’s gained a lot of attention, especially concerning forever chemicals in cookware. Many traditional non-stick pans contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) or PFOA, which are industrial chemicals linked to serious health issues, including endocrine disruption and even carcinogenic properties. This was a big wake-up call for me. I gradually started replacing my old non-stick pans with safer alternatives. Stainless steel pots and pans are durable and versatile, and cast iron is excellent for even heating and can last a lifetime with proper care. I also invested in some true ceramic (not just ceramic-coated aluminum) and glass baking dishes. While it takes a little getting used to cooking without the 'slippery' non-stick surface, the peace of mind is absolutely worth it. Beyond cleaning and cooking, I also looked at how I was storing my food and what utensils I was using. I used to have so many plastic food storage containers, but I learned that plastic can leach chemicals like BPA into food, especially when heated. Switching to glass food storage containers was an easy decision. They’re durable, easy to clean, and don’t stain or retain odors. Plus, you can often go straight from the fridge to the oven or microwave, which is super convenient. For utensils, I phased out plastic spoons and spatulas. Instead, I now primarily use white silicone and wooden options. Food-grade silicone is heat-resistant and won’t scratch your pans, while wooden utensils are gentle, durable, and naturally antimicrobial. It’s a simple swap that reduces plastic exposure in your daily cooking. Finally, don't forget about your dishware and cutting boards. Opting for lead-free dishware, especially plain white plates and bowls, can help avoid hidden heavy metals often found in painted or glazed ceramics. And for cutting boards, I chose a wooden cutting board over plastic. When you cut on plastic, tiny microplastic pieces can get into your food, and plastic can harbor bacteria in its grooves. Wood, on the other hand, is naturally antimicrobial and much kinder to your knives. Making these small, intentional choices adds up to a significantly healthier kitchen environment.

TIP #1 : For your first measurement, weigh the flour using a kitchen scale so you can get an idea of how the mixture should feel. Do not weigh the measuring cup! It should be like a thick paste, like peanut butter. If you need to add a little more water to incorporate the flour, that is OK too!
