I've been making these patriotic sugar cookie bars for years, and they're always a huge hit at our 4th of July barbecues! What I love most is how simple they are, yet they look incredibly impressive. If you're anything like me, sometimes you need a few extra tips to make things even smoother, especially when you're juggling party prep. First off, let's talk about making these 'stars and stripes' really pop! While the recipe calls for red, white, and blue sprinkles, don't stop there. I often use a mix of different patriotic candies. Think small red M&M's, blue chocolate chips, and even some white chocolate drizzles on top for an extra layer of sweetness and visual appeal. For a truly unique touch, I sometimes use a star-shaped cookie cutter to press shallow indentations into the frosting before it sets, then fill those with a contrasting color sprinkle or a mini marshmallow. It really elevates the 'Stars, Stripes & Sugar Cookie Bars' theme! Another great tip for busy hosts is to make parts of this recipe ahead of time. You can bake the cookie bars a day or two in advance. Once they're completely cooled, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store them at room temperature. The frosting can also be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Just let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes and give it a quick whip with an electric mixer before frosting the bars – it'll be perfectly spreadable again. This trick saves so much time on the day of your celebration, allowing you to enjoy your guests instead of being stuck in the kitchen. And speaking of parties, these bars are fantastic because they're so easy to transport and serve. No individual cookies to worry about! I usually cut them into squares or rectangles right before serving, or even slightly before guests arrive if I want to get ahead. You can arrange them on a platter, or even put them in cute cupcake liners for individual servings if you're feeling fancy. They're also much less prone to crumbling than traditional sugar cookies, which is a huge plus when kids (or even adults!) are grabbing for them. If you're new to baking, don't stress! The key to soft, chewy bars is not to overbake them. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes in the oven; the center should look just set, maybe even a tiny bit underdone, as they'll continue to cook slightly as they cool. If your frosting seems too thick, a tiny splash more milk will loosen it right up. Too thin? A tablespoon or two more powdered sugar will do the trick. These patriotic sugar cookie bars aren't just for the 4th of July. I've made them for Memorial Day, Labor Day, or even just a fun summer treat. They're a fantastic way to celebrate with friends and family, and trust me, everyone will be asking for the recipe!
