✨Learning through playing activity✨

Things you’ll need

-cookie cutters/ play doh cutters

-a big piece of white paper (I buy the big roll of white paper)

-paint (I use tempura paint wash to wash off my toddler)

-markers (to write and draw the shapes to help for identification)

🌟 We always use primary colors of paint and mixed them to make a secondary color. He’s always enjoyed doing that so we continue to do it. 🤗

As he grabs a different cookie cutter we name the shapes. We also counted how many of each shapes we have. He pointed out which one had the most, what shapes were big and which ones were small..

-

... Read moreIncorporating play into early learning is one of the most effective ways to nurture a child's cognitive and motor skills. This activity of using cookie cutters or playdoh cutters on a large sheet of white paper is a wonderful example that combines art, math, and language development all in one. Using primary colors of paint not only introduces toddlers to basic hues but also sparks curiosity when mixing to create secondary colors like green, purple, or orange. This hands-on exploration helps develop fine motor skills through painting and manipulating cutters, while also building foundational understanding of color theory in a playful setting. Naming and counting the shapes encourages language skills and number recognition. When toddlers point out which shapes are larger or smaller, or which group has the most items, they're practicing comparative and quantitative thinking that forms the basis of early math concepts. Reinforcing shape names such as circles, squares, triangles, ovals, crescents, octagons, stars, and rectangles—as featured in the images and activity—enhances their vocabulary and shape identification. It's important to create an encouraging atmosphere where children feel free to experiment without fear of mistakes. The use of washable tempura paints ensures clean-up is easy, allowing parents and caregivers to focus on the fun and learning rather than mess. From personal experience, repeating the process regularly strengthens retention. Children begin recognizing shapes in everyday objects and confidently use color words. This type of play also fosters concentration and patience as they carefully paint and count, making it an excellent homeschool or rainy-day activity. To extend the learning, you can introduce storytelling by asking children to imagine what objects the shapes might represent (e.g., a triangle can be a roof, a star a twinkling light). This boosts creativity and verbal skills. Overall, blending sensory play with educational goals through this shapes and colors cookie cutter activity supports multiple areas of toddler development while ensuring an enjoyable experience for both child and adult.
