🍚 BUTTER 🧈
* This is motivated by a famous case in Japan.
Rika Machida "Rika," the only female journalist in the office, lives a continuous lifestyle, works late at night, eats food in convenience stores, barely cooks herself, but one day she wrote a letter to a serial killer who is a famous case, where Manako Kajii "Manako" refused an interview in every media, but she accepted Rika's request because Rika asked her for a recipe.
In the interview, Manako, a woman whom the whole country branded as big, not pretty at the Japanese standard, but with three husbands, used her late charm to seduce the victims before committing the killing in different ways, but why did the trial and the data all match her culinary skills?
That made Rika want to publish the facts of the extreme case, but every time Rika met Manako, it wasn't just about the murder that was revealed, if it gave Rika a new taste and perspective of recipes, Japanese society and the role of women, how everything was connected.
- Below are my personal opinions and views. If you are afraid, spoils can be skipped. -
In fact, this book describes almost three quarters of the book, very slow, very slow, according to a Japanese book that likes to describe water, but hides meat to bite the society in a sore way.
The big point of the book is that Misogyny and the beauty standard in Japanese society (leaning in fear of obesity - Fatphobia), the suspect Manako is said by everyone around to be a fat woman, but actually is not thin and dry, or a person who chooses to eat less, because she likes to cook, goes out to taste delicious shops, so it is against women in society.
Why women and butter? 🧈
(Think of yourself) Women need to know how to control themselves, eat less, cook, not fat, but if you talk about butter is the love of very fat children, real butter, whole, melted, fragrant, eat with anything, delicious.
Butter is the whole thing that Manako talks about. Compare butter as the authority over all the rules of society. When Manako uses butter to cook, it is to do something exotic, something out of the box, like a recipe that Manako gave Rika to try. Rice + butter + choyu. The greasy is full of happiness. Very basic but delicious motivates Rika. Want to try. Want to know. In Menu and Other Stories of Manako (DESIRE)
In summary... Bi thinks this book is very clever, hiding all the questions. If food is an emotional agent, why are people who are hungry (or desire) more than others perceived as social monsters, or the late charm that every woman should have is a loving relationship, or just want to control something? Why is it that a woman is a good person to follow the norms of society? 🤔
I hope that this book will make all women dare to challenge their own limits and succeed as they wish without being pressed by the frame of society. 🤍
See you next book. 🌟🫶🏻
