MY BIGGEST TIPS FOR SUNBURN GIRLIES

For all my Lobster Girlies this summer:

Here’s my two biggest tips for when I turn RED

1) I own a tube top, and always wear it in recovery! I hate the feeling of aloe Vera touching my bra straps or shirts, but wearing a tube top makes it so you can apply aloe Vera all over your chest and back area (which is where I burn the worst) without intersecting with your clothes!

2) Apply your aloe Vera with a makeup brush! This way, your fingers don’t get the sticky substance on them, and you can switch to other activities without worrying what you’re carrying over from applying Aloe. I know you can also just wash your hands after, but I always appreciate a quick time-reducing trick!

I’ve been there more times than I care to admit, and over the years, I’ve picked up some invaluable tricks that go beyond just slapping on some aloe. While my go-to tube top and makeup brush hacks (which are SUPER helpful and easy, by the way!) have saved me countless times from sticky messes and irritated skin, there's even more you can do to soothe that fiery burn and speed up your recovery. First things first, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! A sunburn isn't just surface-level; it's a burn, and your body loses fluids. I always make sure to chug water like it's my job when I'm dealing with a bad burn. Electrolyte drinks can also be a lifesaver. And for that internal ache and inflammation, an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen can work wonders. Just be sure to follow the dosage instructions. It won't cure the burn, but it definitely takes the edge off the pain, especially when you're trying to sleep. While aloe vera is my absolute holy grail, don't underestimate other soothing agents. Sometimes, if my skin is really angry, I’ll gently apply a cool compress or even take a lukewarm (not hot!) shower. Oatmeal baths are surprisingly effective for calming irritated skin – just make sure the water isn't too warm. For specific areas that are truly suffering, like my shoulders and chest (where I often turn red like a lobster), I look for lotions with ingredients like colloidal oatmeal or ceramides, which help repair the skin barrier without feeling heavy or greasy. And let’s talk about clothing – my tube top hack isn't just about applying aloe with ease. It's about comfort! Anything tight or abrasive against sunburned skin is pure torture. I swear by loose-fitting, breathable cotton fabrics. Think oversized t-shirts, flowy dresses, or yes, those trusty tube tops, especially around areas like the shoulders and back. Avoiding bra straps or tight waistbands can make a huge difference in your comfort level throughout the day, allowing your skin to breathe and heal without constant friction. Regarding applying aloe vera with a makeup brush, it’s truly a game-changer. I usually grab a clean, soft foundation brush or a flat, wide paint brush (dedicated only for aloe, of course!). This not only prevents that sticky feeling on your hands, but it also allows for a much more even and gentle application, which is crucial when your skin is tender. Make sure the aloe is 100% pure, if possible, and store it in the fridge for an extra cooling sensation – trust me, it feels heavenly on hot, burned skin! Once it's on, let it air dry before dressing to maximize absorption and minimize stickiness. Finally, a quick but important note: while these tips are fantastic for managing typical ‘lobster red’ sunburn, always pay attention to your body. If you develop blisters covering a large area, severe pain, fever, chills, or signs of infection, it’s definitely time to see a doctor. And of course, the best 'recovery' is prevention! Even after a bad burn, it’s a good reminder to always reach for that sunscreen, seek shade, and wear protective clothing next time you're out. Learning from past burns is key to protecting your skin in the future.
