... Read moreWow, seeing my unfinished sketchbook go on a little tour has me so excited to share even more about how I bring my pages to life! If you're like me and love making your sketchbook more than just drawings, but a whole interactive experience, you're in the right place. I've found that adding little surprises can make every flip of the page feel like an adventure.
One of my absolute favorite techniques for an interactive sketchbook is creating elements that actually move or change. You saw my little interactive paper television in the tour, right? It's surprisingly simple to make! All you need is some cardstock, scissors, and a bit of glue. You can cut out a TV frame, then create a little slot at the top or side where you can slide in different 'screens.' I love drawing tiny landscapes, abstract patterns, or even pixel art inspired by games like Minecraft or Among Us for these screens. It's like having a miniature art gallery on one page!
Another super fun idea is adding moving parts to your original characters (OCs). My OC with the moving wing was a blast to create. For this, I usually draw the main body of the character on the page, then draw the movable part (like a wing, an arm, or even a hat) separately. Cut it out, and then use a small paper brad or even just a tiny folded paper tab to attach it to the main drawing. This gives your characters so much personality and makes them literally jump off the page.
Don't forget about flip pages or hidden compartments! The 'About ME' page with the flip flap is a perfect example. You can draw something on the main page, then attach a smaller piece of paper over a section that lifts up to reveal more details, secrets, or even another drawing. Think of it like a treasure hunt within your sketchbook! It's fantastic for character backstories, showing before-and-after designs, or just adding a playful element. Using different stickers, like the ones I have from Among Us and Minecraft, can also add texture and visual interest to these flip-up sections.
For those of you into cartoonist sketchbooks and fanart, incorporating OCs and characters from your favorite shows or games is a must. Developing your own original characters like my pumpkin-headed friend or the horned character from the tour, is such a rewarding process. Think about their personality, what they wear, and how they interact with their world. Don't be afraid to experiment with different styles! And for fanart, whether it's drawing your favorite Minecraft creature or trying out the distinct style of popular shows like South Park, it's a fantastic way to practice new techniques and show love for your fandoms. You can even create a miniature journal for your OC, like I did, where you can write their thoughts or draw tiny scenes from their life.
Ultimately, your sketchbook is your creative playground. Don't be afraid to get messy, experiment, and make it uniquely yours. The goal isn't perfection, but expression and fun. So grab your supplies and start making some interactive magic!
