We don’t speak each other’s languages but…

We are such great friends! We have known each other for 1 year now! The first time I met L was on a college campus and she began signing to me! I had taken a class or two in college on sign language and had very little memory on vocabulary. L was learning English as a second language (ESL) and we decided to meet so she could teach me ASL and I could help her with ESL!

Now we have so much fun together. My grammar is still horrible (ASL and English have completely different grammar structures) but I am learning new words every day. Currently my sign language is more like pigeon sign language (PSL) but I work hard to get better and we find other ways to communicate when I cannot sign a word. She is so patient with me and I am soooo thankful for her!

She’s become such a great friend and I am so thankful for smiles, laughs and good times :)

Many individuals are embarking on their own journeys of learning sign language and connecting with members of the Deaf community. The relationship between a hearing person and someone fluent in ASL opens doors to new experiences that foster cultural understanding and empathy. When learning a new language like ASL or navigating ESL, patience becomes paramount. Effective communication often relies on creative methods such as gestures, drawings, or facial expressions. This adaptability enables meaningful interactions, allowing friendships to flourish irrespective of linguistic differences. Social media and online resources have made it easier than ever to engage with learning communities. Platforms for sharing resources, supporting each other, and exchanging tips on mastering ASL or ESL are abundant. With hashtags like #learningasl and #deafcommunity, individuals can find camaraderie and encouragement in pursuing language skills. Embracing different languages enriches our lives and promotes inclusivity. Strong bonds formed through shared challenges, laughter, and learning experiences embody the essence of true friendship. Remember, it is not the words spoken, but the connections made that truly matter.
