PTO donation… normal or not?
When I first read this email, I actually had to stop and reread it because something about it felt off. I know companies ask for PTO donations sometimes, especially when someone is seriously ill or going through something major — but the way this was worded? It almost feels like they’re outsourcing basic employer responsibilities to the rest of the staff.
And instead of addressing whatever “challenging situation” these employees are dealing with, the burden suddenly shifts to coworkers to fill the gap. It just made me wonder… if the company truly valued their people, wouldn’t they have policies in place to support situations like these without asking others to sacrifice their own time?
I don’t mind helping coworkers — I honestly love when workplaces take care of each other — but I can’t shake the feeling that this should’ve been handled differently.

Transparent communication and clear boundaries regarding voluntary participation are vital. Open dialogue within workplaces about how PTO donation fits into broader employee support systems can help in aligning expectations. Ultimately, while PTO donation is a noble concept that can provide much-needed relief, it should not replace employers’ responsibility to establish and maintain adequate paid leave policies.
