This 25-Dish Banana Leaf Feast Is a Must-Try
If South Indian food feels a bit intimidating or totally new to you, this is honestly one of the best ways to experience it. We went for a Pongal Festival lunch at Bangalore Cafe and were served 25 different dishes on one banana leaf. No fixed order, no rules, just eat what you like and mix everything however you want. These massive spreads only happen during big festivals like Pongal or Deepavali for lunch.
What surprised us most was how bold and comforting the flavours were. Halfway through, we realised we completely forgot the entire spread was vegetarian. The restaurant was packed, the energy was high, and it really felt like a cultural celebration instead of just a meal.
Also got a little insider heads up 👀 Mango season is coming and they’ll be doing a mango themed menu this month (Feb). Already low key excited for that one!
If you enjoy discovering food that feels special and festive, this is worth putting on your list.

If you are new to South Indian cuisine or looking to deepen your food adventures, a banana leaf feast at Bangalore Cafe is truly a memorable way to experience authentic Bangalore special food. The feast includes a variety of dishes like sweet lentils, savoury fritters, and traditional chutneys, all served together on a single banana leaf, which adds a subtle aroma enhancing the meal. One of the highlights of such feasts is the freedom to mix and match dishes as you wish—there’s no fixed sequence, which makes every bite a unique experience. You can enjoy staples such as kaali dose, mango pickles, and the slightly sweet ginger lemon panaka, creating a perfect balance of spicy and sweet flavors. This kind of spread is typically available during major festivals like Pongal and Deepavali, making it a culturally rich celebration rather than just a meal. The energy buzzed in the restaurant adds to the festive vibe, perfect for people who enjoy tasting food in a lively, communal atmosphere. For those curious about ingredients, the feast often features rice-based sides infused with gula melaka (palm sugar), corn, potatoes, and long beans, which are staples in South Indian cooking. Pairing these with the variety of sides and condiments ensures a richly layered dining experience. Also, don’t miss out on seasonal specials like the upcoming mango-themed menu in February. It's a fresh twist to the usual delicacies and offers a sweet finish to the savory feast. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want to dive into Bangalore’s culinary scene, this feast is a must-try. It beautifully showcases the diversity of Bangalore special items, making it a perfect spot for birthday celebrations or casual food discoveries alike.
