🔥 Biggest Fish Head We’ve Ever Seen in SG?!

The Chopped Chili Fish Head King at 湘厨 The Xiang came out SO big it honestly looked like it could feed a family of 4!

And then came the surprise moment…

The staff actually did a mini lo hei-style table serving ✨

Using a big spoon, she gently broke apart the fish head in the bubbling spicy broth while saying auspicious phrases like “吃鱼头,万事不愁” — basically wishing us a life with no worries 😌🔥

It felt like dinner + performance + celebration all at once

Here’s what stood out from what we tried:

🐟 Fish Head King (剁椒鱼头王)

Super fresh, thick and juicy with that bold spicy chilli kick 🌶️

Really flavourful but heads up — lots of bones so eat slowly

🥔 Crispy Edge Potato Slices

More soft than crispy, but still really savoury and addictive

🥩 Hunan-style cured pork with dried radish

Smoky, intense, slightly acquired taste but very authentic

🥒 Soy pickled cucumber

So refreshing and tangy — perfect to reset your taste buds between spicy bites

🍲 Pork belly chicken soup

Honestly one of the highlights. Rich, creamy and stays warm till the end 😌

🌽 Corn cakes

Warm, soft and lightly sweet — super comforting when dipped into the broth

🍵 Drinks wise, the Jin Junmei tea and handmade lemon tea were both solid picks to balance the heavy flavours

Also, the vibe here is actually quite nice — private rooms upstairs if you’re coming in a group, or the colourful thread + carp lights downstairs if you’re here for photos 😳✨

If you’re into big sharing dishes and dramatic food moments, this one is worth experiencing at least once

湘厨湖南菜 The Xiang Restaurant

湘厨湖南菜 The Xiang Restaurant
6/12 Edited to

... Read moreThe moment you step into 湘厨 The Xiang Restaurant, the atmosphere is inviting and warm, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience. When the Chopped Chili Fish Head King arrives, its scale is truly impressive, easily feeding a family of four, making it ideal for group dining and shared celebrations. The mini lo hei-style serving is a charming twist that elevates the meal beyond ordinary dinners. This ritual, where staff break apart the fish head in the bubbling, spicy broth while sharing auspicious wishes like “吃鱼头,万事不愁” (eat fish head, and have no worries), adds a festive and personal touch that engages diners in the cultural heritage behind the dish. From personal experience, the texture and freshness of the fish head shine through with every bite. The thick, juicy flesh absorbs the bold spicy chili sauce beautifully. However, the bone content means it’s best enjoyed slowly and mindfully to savor its full flavor safely. Sides like the Crispy Edge Potato Slices, though softer than crunchy, provide a savory contrast that complements the main dish’s heat. The Hunan-style cured pork with dried radish brings a smoky, intense flavor that’s authentically regional and an acquired taste worth trying for adventurous palates. The Soy Pickled Cucumbers offer a refreshing, tangy bite that cleanses the palate between spicy spoonfuls, enhancing the overall enjoyment. One of the standout dishes is the pork belly chicken soup. Its creamy richness and warmth linger throughout the meal, providing comfort and balance to the spicy flavors. The accompanying corn cakes, soft and slightly sweet, are perfect for dipping into the broth, adding another layer of texture and taste. The beverage options like Jin Junmei tea and handmade lemon tea work well to neutralize the bold, heavy flavors, helping prevent palate fatigue during this vibrant meal. Additionally, the restaurant environment deserves praise — private rooms upstairs cater to groups seeking intimacy for celebrations, while the lively, colorful décor downstairs with thread and carp lights makes it an Instagram-worthy spot for foodies. For anyone fascinated by dramatic food presentations, communal dining, and authentic Hunan cuisine in Singapore, this experience at The Xiang is a must-try. It’s not just a meal but a celebration that combines taste, culture, and spectacle perfectly.
