The Surprise Wasn’t The Main Dish 👀

When we sat down at Nong Geng Ji, we expected the mains to be the highlight of the meal. They were all delicious, but the biggest surprise wasn't actually one of the main dishes.

It was the Wuchang Steamed Rice with Sweet Potato and Red Dates. 🍚 We thought it would simply be something to go alongside the meal, but it quietly brought every dish together and somehow made us keep reaching for another bite.

✨ Here's what we'd happily order again:

🥢 Stir Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli Combo

One of our favourites! The Hunan chillies were savoury instead of overly spicy, and there were plenty of mini abalones tucked between the tender slices of pork.

🦐 Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic

The tableside presentation made this even more enjoyable. Watching the lid being lifted and the staff mixing everything together released an amazing garlic aroma, and every strand of vermicelli soaked up the flavour beautifully.

🌶️ Mapo Tofu with Fish Maw

Silky, comforting and just the right amount of spice without being overpowering.

🍅 Stir Fried Silky Tomato and Egg

Extra saucy with plenty of sweet tomato in every bite. Comfort food at its best.

🥬 Stir Fried Cauliflower

Perfectly cooked with a lovely crunch, plus little bits of pork lard that added even more flavour.

🍲 Chicken Soup with Abalone and Matsutake Mushroom

A light and comforting soup that balanced the richer dishes nicely.

🍚 Why the rice stood out

Freshly steamed with glossy grains, sweet potato and red dates, it wasn't the star of the meal, but it complemented every dish so well that we found ourselves reaching for another spoonful again and again.

💡 Big Explorer Tip:

Don't forget to save some room for the complimentary snacks and ice cream! 🍦 We were so full by the end of the meal that we completely missed them. We'll definitely be saving some room for them next time! 🍦🤭

... Read moreHaving visited Nong Geng Ji recently, I was genuinely surprised by how the Wuchang Steamed Rice with Sweet Potato and Red Dates elevated the entire dining experience. While I initially assumed the mains would be the stars, the rice's subtly sweet and aromatic qualities served as a perfect palate cleanser and connector among the richly flavored dishes. One memorable detail was how the glossy grains of rice combined with the natural sweetness of the red dates and tender chunks of sweet potato balanced the savory and spicy notes from other dishes. This kind of thoughtful pairing is what transforms a meal from good to unforgettable. During my meal, the Stir Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli stood out for its perfectly balanced heat, thanks to the Hunan chillies which were flavorful without being overwhelming. The rich mini abalones nestled in the pork slices added an unexpected but delightful seafood touch. Equally impressive was the tableside presentation of the Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic—the aroma released as the staff mixed the ingredients enhanced the anticipation and enjoyment of each bite. For those who appreciate comfort food, the Stir Fried Silky Tomato and Egg was a nostalgic dish packed with juicy tomatoes and a saucy texture that felt truly homemade. The Chicken Soup with Abalone and Matsutake Mushroom offered a soothing finish that helped round out the meal’s heavier flavors. I also learned a valuable tip that many might overlook: save room for the free-flow snacks and ice cream offered after the meal. They are not just complimentary treats; they add a sweet and refreshing closure to an already satisfying dining experience. If you plan a visit, consider going with family or friends—these dishes are ideal for sharing and exploring flavors together. Nong Geng Ji’s Hunan-inspired offerings at Orchardgateway provide a perfect setting for group dinners, date nights, or casual food cravings. From my experience, the unique rice dish and the harmonious balance of all components made this meal one I would eagerly recommend and revisit.
