Kingfishers
Physical characteristics:
- Size: Varies in size by type, from small (10cm) to medium (45cm)
- Fur: brightly colored and versatile, such as blue, blue, green, orange, red, white and black. Some are beautifully patterned.
- Beak: It has a long, pointed and strong beak. It is used for catching fish and digging burrows. It varies in shape according to the type of food.
- Legs: Short and small legs. Front toes are partially joined (syndactyly), making them hold the branches firmly.
- Tail: Short tail
Residence and distribution:
- found all over the world except for polar regions and arid deserts.
- Living along various bodies of water such as rivers, streams, lakes, coastal, mangroves and evergreen forests.
Behavior and ecology:
- Diet: Eat fish as the main food. It also eats insects, shrimp, crabs, frogs, buttocks, small reptiles and small mammals.
- How to hunt prey:
- Hunting from the island: The kingfisher will perch on branches, rocks, or banks. When found, the prey will jump down to catch quickly.
- Hunting by gliding flight: Some kingfishers will fly gliding above the surface of the water. When found, prey will leave to catch.
- Nesting: Dig burrows along the banks, anthills, wood burrows, or use the old nests of other birds.
- Reproduction: Lay 2-10 eggs at a time.
- Vocal: There is a loud pitched cry, different from kind to kind.
Conservation status:
- Most kingfishers are "LC" or least vulnerable to extinction, however, some have a more worrying status, such as "Near Threatened," "Vulnerable" (vulnerable to threat), or "Endangered" (endangered), because they are threatened by threats such as habitat loss, hunting, and pollution.
Cultural and ecological significance:
- The kingfisher is a symbol of good luck, peace and happiness in many cultures.
- Helps control aquatic and insect populations in the ecosystem.
- As an indicator of the integrity of the water supply.

หลายคนเจอนกสีฟ้าๆ ส้มๆ แวบผ่านริมน้ำแล้วสงสัยว่า “นี่คือนกอะไร” ส่วนตัวเวลาไปเดินเลียบคลอง/บึง มักจะเดาว่าเป็นนกกระเต็นก่อนเลย เพราะทรงเด่นมาก: จะงอยปากยาวแหลม หางสั้น และชอบเกาะนิ่งๆ แล้วพุ่งลงน้ำเร็วมาก นกกระเต็นภาษาอังกฤษคือ Kingfisher (บางแหล่งเรียกสั้นๆ ว่า kingfisher) ถ้าค้นคำว่า “กระเต็น” ก็จะเจอกลุ่มเดียวกันนี่แหละค่ะ นกกระเต็นกินอะไรเป็นอาหาร? จากที่สังเกตตอนดูนกจริงๆ เมนูหลักคือ “ปลา” โดยเฉพาะตามลำคลองใสๆ จะเห็นพฤติกรรมคาบปลาชัดมาก แต่หลายชนิดก็ปรับตัวเก่ง กินได้ทั้งแมลง กุ้ง ปู ลูกอ๊อด กบ หรือสัตว์เลื้อยคลานตัวเล็กๆ ด้วย ดังนั้นถ้าแหล่งน้ำยังสมบูรณ์ มีเหยื่อเยอะ โอกาสเจอนกกระเต็นก็สูงขึ้น นกกระเต็นมีกี่ชนิด / นกกระเต็นประเทศไทยเจอได้ที่ไหน? คำถามนี้ตอบแบบสั้นๆ คือ “มีหลายชนิด” และกระจายตามชนิดถิ่นอาศัยค่ะ ถ้าอยากเริ่มดูนกแบบง่าย ให้โฟกัสพื้นที่ที่มีน้ำ: ริมแม่น้ำ ลำธาร บึง ป่าชายเลน หรือชายฝั่งบางจุด แล้วค่อยหัดแยกชนิดที่คนค้นบ่อย เช่น - นกกระเต็นธรรมดา: จุดสังเกตเด่นคือสีฟ้าน้ำเงินกับส้ม - นกกระเต็นปักหลัก (ขาวดำใหญ่/ลายขาวดำ): มักเห็นบินร่อนเหนือผิวน้ำแล้วทิ้งตัวลงจับปลา - นกกระเต็นน้อยหลังสีน้ำเงิน: โทนสีน้ำเงินชัด เห็นแล้วสะดุดตา - นกกระเต็นใหญ่ธรรมดา: ขนาดใหญ่ จะงอยปากดูหนักแน่น - กระเต็นแดง: สีส้ม-แดงเด่นมาก - นกกระเต็นอกขาว: หลายคนจะถามว่า “หายากไหม” ความรู้สึกส่วนตัวคือเจอไม่บ่อยเท่าชนิดยอดฮิตอย่างนกกระเต็นธรรมดา และมักขึ้นกับพื้นที่/ฤดูกาลด้วย ถ้าแหล่งน้ำเงียบๆ คนไม่พลุกพล่าน โอกาสเจอดีกว่า นกกระเต็นเลี้ยงได้ไหม? คำถามนี้ต้องระวังค่ะ โดยทั่วไป “ไม่แนะนำ” และอาจเข้าข่ายผิดกฎหมายคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่าได้ (ขึ้นกับชนิดและกฎหมายที่บังคับใช้ในช่วงนั้น) อีกอย่างนกกระเต็นต้องการอาหารสด (ปลา/สัตว์น้ำ) และพื้นที่ธรรมชาติสำหรับล่า การเลี้ยงในกรงทำให้เครียดและบาดเจ็บง่ายมาก ถ้าชอบจริงๆ แนะนำเปลี่ยนเป็นการดูนก/ถ่ายรูปแทน สนุกและช่วยอนุรักษ์ได้ด้วย นกกระเต็น ความเชื่อคืออะไร? หลายวัฒนธรรมมองนกกระเต็นเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของโชคดี ความสงบ หรือความอุดมสมบูรณ์ เพราะมักอยู่ใกล้น้ำที่สมบูรณ์ ส่วนตัวมองว่า “ความเชื่อที่ดีที่สุด” คือการเห็นนกกระเต็นเป็นสัญญาณว่าแหล่งน้ำแถวนั้นยังพอมีชีวิต มีปลาและแมลงพอให้มันอยู่ได้ ทริคเล็กๆ เวลาอยากเจอนกกระเต็น: ไปเช้าตรู่หรือเย็น เลือกจุดที่มีคันดิน/กิ่งไม้ยื่นเหนือน้ำ แล้วหยุดยืนเงียบๆ สักพัก บางทีจะเห็นมันมาเกาะให้เราดูแบบใกล้กว่าที่คิดค่ะ
