How Do We Travel Full-Time After Retirement?

People often ask us, “How can you travel full-time after retirement?” 🌏

The answer is actually quite simple.

We rent out our home while we’re away, so it continues to generate rental income while we travel.

We work with a SGD 4,000 monthly slow-travel budget for the two of us. Some months we spend less, and when we do, we keep the difference.

So instead of constantly drawing from our savings to fund our travels, we let one of our assets help support the lifestyle we’ve chosen.

Is it the usual way to retire? Probably not. 😄

We didn’t want our retirement to mean staying in one place.

We wanted the freedom to live in different places, experience everyday life beyond being tourists, and see where this journey takes us.

We’ve planned the next couple of years.

Beyond that?

We’ll see. 🌏

... Read moreTraveling full-time after retirement is a dream for many, but making it financially sustainable can be challenging. Renting out your home while you travel is an effective strategy to generate steady income and maintain your lifestyle anywhere in the world. Beyond simply funding your trips, this approach transforms your property into a productive asset, helping you avoid depleting retirement savings prematurely. Managing a fixed monthly travel budget, like SGD 4,000 for two people, allows flexibility and control over expenses. Some months you may spend less than you earn from your rental, allowing you to save the surplus for unexpected costs or future travels. This method supports slow travel, encouraging deeper immersion into local cultures and daily routines instead of rushing through tourist hotspots. In my experience, slow travel enriches retirement life by fostering meaningful connections and promoting wellness through reduced stress and a balanced pace. It challenges the traditional retirement model, offering freedom and choice about where and how you live. Planning a couple of years ahead provides security, while remaining open to spontaneous travel plans keeps the adventure alive. To successfully implement this lifestyle, it’s important to ensure your rental property is managed efficiently, whether via a reliable property manager or trusted services. Maintaining good communication with renters and regularly reviewing budget plans also helps in sustaining this unconventional retirement lifestyle. Ultimately, full-time travel after retirement supported by home rental income is a lifestyle grounded in intentional living, financial savvy, and a passion for discovery. It’s a rewarding way to embrace retirement with purpose and freedom, crafting a personal journey that goes beyond the usual holiday stays.
