Who’s Watching Your Data?

This Activity Teaches Girls How to Find Out

2025/12/28 Edited to

... Read moreAs someone who’s become more aware of digital privacy issues over time, I know how easy it is to overlook the little ways your data is watched and collected. For example, apps requesting access to your camera, microphone, contacts, or location can feel intrusive once you realize what they’re sharing without your full consent. One easy way to start protecting your space is by setting clear rules with family or guardians about what apps can access on your device—this builds both awareness and shared responsibility. It’s also helpful to think like a digital detective. Monitor what kind of tracking cookies are stored on your browser and clear them regularly. This helps reduce personalized ads and potential data leaks. Making a simple 3-step personal guard plan, such as: 1) regularly checking app permissions, 2) avoiding sharing location in posts, and 3) disabling unnecessary microphone or camera access, can make a big difference in maintaining your privacy. Sharing online can sometimes unintentionally expose your home, school, or neighborhood. Imagining strangers seeing your posts is a powerful reminder to guard your digital footprint carefully. Over time, practicing these habits becomes a routine that helps you stay safe inside your digital world. Empowering girls to master these skills not only protects them but also promotes confidence in managing digital spaces safely and responsibly.
