If you're asking yourself, "Is Nafplio worth visiting?" — my answer is a resounding yes! This picturesque coastal town in Greece truly captured my heart during my recent trip. It's the perfect blend of history, stunning scenery, and vibrant local life, making it an ideal destination for anyone looking for an authentic Greek experience beyond the islands. From the moment I arrived in Nafplio, I was enchanted by its Venetian architecture and the sparkling turquoise waters of the Argolic Gulf. It's often called one of Greece's most beautiful towns, and I can definitely see why! If you're planning a visit, here are some of the absolute must-do activities and attractions that made my trip so special: 1. Conquer Palamidi Fortress: This is perhaps the most iconic landmark in Nafplio, Greece. Perched high above the town, the Palamidi Fortress offers breathtaking panoramic views. While you can drive up, I highly recommend taking on the challenge of climbing the (supposedly) 999 steps from the town. It's a workout, but the views from the top are incredibly rewarding. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time exploring the various bastions and courtyards. It's truly one of the top things to do in Nafplio. 2. Stroll Through the Charming Old Town: Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets of Nafplio's Old Town. Every corner reveals something new, from boutique shops selling local crafts to cozy cafes and traditional tavernas. The architecture is a beautiful mix of Venetian, Ottoman, and neoclassical styles. Just wandering around, soaking in the atmosphere, is an activity in itself. Don't forget to grab a gelato! 3. Visit Bourtzi Castle: This small, fortified island castle sits gracefully in the middle of Nafplio's harbor. You can take a short boat trip out to explore it, which offers a unique perspective of the town from the sea. It's particularly magical at sunset. 4. Relax at Arvanitia Beach: Just a short walk from the Old Town, Arvanitia Beach is a perfect spot for a refreshing swim on a warm day. The coastal path leading to it is also a lovely scenic walk. If you're looking for more space, Karathona Beach is a bit further out but offers a longer sandy stretch, great for families. 5. Explore Syntagma Square & Archaeological Museum: Syntagma Square is the heart of Nafplio, bustling with life, cafes, and historic buildings. The Archaeological Museum, housed in a magnificent Venetian building, is right on the square and well worth a visit to delve deeper into the region's rich history. 6. Indulge in Greek Cuisine: No trip to Nafplio is complete without savoring the local food. From fresh seafood by the harbor to traditional moussaka and souvlaki in the tavernas, your taste buds are in for a treat. I found so many amazing spots just by exploring the back streets of the old town. Nafplio truly offers a complete travel experience – whether you're interested in history, stunning views, delicious food, or simply relaxing by the sea, there are activities for everyone. It's also an excellent base for exploring nearby ancient sites like Mycenae and Epidaurus. For a family vacation, it offers a safe and charming environment with plenty to keep everyone engaged. So, if you're compiling a travel blog or just seeking your next adventure, make sure Nafplio, Greece, is at the top of your list!
