Passing on trauma?

“Is this passed‑down trauma from others, or are we creating new trauma of our own?”

1 day agoEdited to

... Read moreReflecting on trauma's origins, I've often wondered whether the pain I feel stems from inherited burdens or my own life experiences. Trauma can be quietly passed down through families via emotional patterns, behaviors, or even unspoken memories. For example, habitual criticism or mocking gestures in childhood, as noted in experiences like feeling 'less' or misunderstood, can silently shape how we cope with stress and relationships. Recognizing these patterns is the first step toward healing. Therapy and open conversations play critical roles in breaking the cycle. Professional support helps identify and address trauma that may have been normalized or ignored. Additionally, creating new trauma through our reactions—such as harsh criticism or unresolved emotional pain—emphasizes the importance of mindfulness in our interactions. Being empathetic and intentional in communication can prevent further emotional harm. In my journey, understanding this balance between inherited and new trauma has fostered compassion for myself and my loved ones. It’s empowering to realize that while trauma may influence us, it doesn’t have to define us. Actively seeking healing and practicing self-care can transform these experiences into sources of strength and growth.
