Stretches to Release Trauma Stored in Hips
lThe hips are often referred to as a "storage center" for trauma, and this phenomenon can be understood through a blend of physical, emotional, and psychological perspectives.
1️⃣Physical Anatomy
✨Muscle Tension: The hip area includes major muscles that can become tight due to stress, injury, or prolonged tension. This tension can create a physical manifestation of emotional pain.
✨Nervous System Response: The hips are closely connected to the body’s fight-or-flight response. When we experience trauma, the body often reacts by tightening these muscles as a protective mechanism.
2️⃣ Emotional Connections
✨Stored Emotions: Our bodies have a remarkable ability to hold onto unprocessed emotions. The hips, being a major joint, can accumulate stress and emotional pain over time. This can manifest as discomfort or tightness in the area.
✨ Lack of Movement: Emotional trauma can lead to a desire to withdraw or avoid movement. This stagnation can exacerbate tension in the hips, creating a cycle of emotional and physical discomfort.
3️⃣Psychological Factors
✨Repression: We often repress difficult emotions rather than expressing them. This repression can manifest physically, particularly in areas associated with movement and freedom, like the hips.
✨Fear of Vulnerability: The hips are connected to our sense of stability and safety. Trauma can create fear around vulnerability, leading to tighter hip muscles as a form of self-protection.
Healing Through Hip Opening
Engaging in hip-opening exercises allows for the release of this stored trauma. By consciously working on these areas, we create space for emotional release and healing. Each pose encourages awareness and invites the flow of energy, promoting both physical and emotional well-being.
My favorite are:
* Half Pigeon
* Happy Baby
* Lying Butterfly
Try to hold each exercise for about 2-3 minutes. I play calming music and like to say a different affirmation during each one.
🧘🏼♀️ Left side of Pigeon, “I release anything blocking my ability to express myself.” (For the Feminine)
🧘🏼♀️ Right side of Pigeon, “I release the need to be strong all the time.” (For the Masculine)
🧘🏼♀️Happy Baby: “I am safe in my body.”
🧘🏼♀️Lying Butterfly: “I am ready to surrender all that I have been holding onto.”
As you practice, remember: it’s a journey. Honor your feelings and embrace the process of releasing what no longer serves you.
