Setting a boundary is not rebellion

Setting a boundary is not rebellion, disrespect, or bitterness. Sometimes it is the most obedient thing you can do. Obedient to your healing. Obedient to your calling. Obedient to the wisdom God has given you about what harms your heart and what protects it.

We are often taught that “good Christians” tolerate anything, forgive instantly, stay available, stay soft, stay silent, stay accessible—even when the relationship is draining, disrespectful, or emotionally unsafe. But God never asked you to sacrifice your well-being at the altar of someone else’s comfort.

Boundaries are not punishment.

They are clarity.

They are stewardship.

They are obedience to God’s instruction to guard your heart (Proverbs 4:23).

You can love people and still say “this is not healthy for me.”

You can forgive someone and still create distance.

You can pray for someone and still choose peace over chaos.

Bitterness closes the heart.

Boundaries protect it.

When you set a boundary out of obedience—not spite—you are choosing alignment over approval, healing over people-pleasing, and God’s voice over guilt.

... Read moreIt's one thing to understand that setting boundaries isn't rebellion, but an act of obedience, as the original post beautifully explains. It truly resonates with me that "Boundaries as an act of obedience, not bitterness." But how do we actually put this into practice? I've been on my own journey learning to set boundaries, and it's definitely a process, not a destination. It can feel incredibly uncomfortable at first, especially if you're used to always saying yes or prioritizing others' comfort over your own peace. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that healthy boundaries aren't about shutting people out; they're about creating space for healthier connections and protecting your energy. So, what does this look like in real life? It could be as simple as telling a friend you can't join their last-minute plans because you need a quiet evening to recharge. It might mean setting limits on how often you engage with family members who tend to drain you emotionally, or even taking a break from social media when you feel overwhelmed. For me, it was learning to politely decline extra work tasks when my plate was already full, realizing that saying yes would only lead to burnout and resentfulness. Communicating these boundaries can be the trickiest part. I've found that being clear, concise, and using "I" statements works best. Instead of, "You always ask too much of me," try, "I need to protect my time on weekends, so I won't be able to help with that project." It's about expressing your needs without blaming. And remember, you don't always owe a lengthy explanation. A simple "No, I can't this time" or "That doesn't work for me" is often enough. It took me a while to realize that over-explaining often felt like I was seeking permission, rather than stating a boundary. The guilt, oh the guilt! It's completely normal to feel a pang of guilt when you first start setting boundaries. We're often conditioned to believe that prioritizing ourselves is selfish. But as the original post wisely puts it, "God never asked you to sacrifice your well-being at the altar of someone else’s comfort." This really hit home for me. Thinking of it as an act of "obedience to your healing" or "guarding your heart" (Proverbs 4:23) helps reframe that guilt into a sense of purpose. It’s not about being bitter or punishing anyone; it's about stewardship of your own well-being. Over time, I've noticed incredible positive changes. My relationships have become more authentic because they're built on honesty and mutual respect, not my constant people-pleasing. I have more energy for the things and people that truly matter to me. Most importantly, I feel a deeper sense of inner peace and self-respect. It's like I'm finally living in alignment with what *I* need, not just what others expect. If you're just starting out, don't feel like you need to overhaul every relationship overnight. Begin with one small boundary in one area of your life where you feel most drained. Perhaps it's limiting screen time or saying no to a minor request. Each small step is a victory and builds confidence. It's a journey of self-discovery and honoring your true self, and it's absolutely worth it for the peace it brings.
